I have just replaced the turbo on my 1990 2.8 bighorn. I replaced it with a later model turbo (1996 I think) but it fits on ok. Anyway the guy I brought the 2nd hand turbo off who seemed pretty clued up said that I should restrict the opening in the banjo bolt to 1.5mm (as opposed to the 3mm hole it had) because it requires lower preasure and I did this. It seems to run well but when I turn the motor off I can hear the turbo still whining as it slows down. You can't hear it over the noise of the motor. My old turbo didn't do this so is this a sign that somethings wrong.
On a different note when I was putting it in I forgot to do up one of the two bolts on the oil return so it leaks a bit of oil on the join but I cant imagine this being an issue as long as I keep an eye on the oil level. Doing up that bolt would require removing lots of bits just to get at it.

I would fix the leak esspecialy if its a loose bolt They only loosen furthur then fall out along with all your oil. If the noise you get is a fairly loud wheeuw as you shut down that lasts about 3 - 5 seconds that is a sign that that turbo is about to fail spectakularly

Did you use new seals and did you thoughly check the engine manifolds before you put the turbo on?? THe 2.8's have a bit of a rep for warping or cracking the manifold and this sometimes causes a whining kinda sound when the motor is turned off, other wise i'd start shoping for another turbo, also you should deffenately do up the bolts, as they will come out right when you don't want them too and then you will more than likely fry your turbo and possibly damage your motor through lack of oil, its amazing how bolts can stay loose for ages and then one day just fall out!!

I know the bolt you're talking about, Had to tighten mine up after it was all back together too. If you've got a good 1/4inch drive socket set with some universals and extensions you can get to it without removing anything, just takes a while to line it up and a mirror helps. Pay to tighten it up now before all turns bad. As long as the turbo was spinning over freely and didn't have too much bearing backlash it should last ok. Mine now has a later model one off a 3.1 also and goes great.
