I have just rebuilt my Bighorn 4JG2/TD engine but the crankshaft rear seal leaked like a drip. I suspect, I damaged it when fitting. I have now removed it for replacement with another new one by first removing the gearbox while the engine is still mounted. How can I safely fit it without damaging it and which end goes in first?

ok if it looks like this one the flat side should be out like in the pic. with installing you really should have a installing tool made up with a centre area to go through the hole and a flat area that supports the flat area of the seal, but no bigger than the hole it's going in......... but that dosn't always happen especially when there is a crank in the way, so maybe a peice of pvc tube the right size (which should be the outer edge of the seal) or a pin punch but be very careful as they can be easily crushed....... there are proabable more options that other people might know....
