is white smoke coming out of the oil filler and dipstick a pretty much sure shot way of telling that my engine is a blow-by? smoke is pretty visible but oil consumption is normal...anyways, ill have it compression tested this weekend and i think thatll give me all the answers...just asking for your thoughts for the mean time...

How long has it been doing this and how much. It dont sound good but all engines do produce some blow by somtimes I trust you used a suitable oil . Compression and leak down test should tell all. Looking at your previos posts all does not sound well in the engine department.

hahaha! you're right geeves...dunno maybe this year is just not good for her eh? hehehe...the past years have not given me a single problem, my mitsu folks had theirs conked out at 99k, i think they're just coming in all at the same time...im still observing, can't wait for the weekend to end all this and find out the verdict! if the pistons are already tired and no good...im left with bidding my engine bye bye and say hello surplus/2nd hand (which is not that easy considering the risk involved? or find a trusty rebuilder and make her new again!=)

ow, by the way...i really could not tell how long it's been doing that but i first saw it when i had my injection pump serviced about 3 mos ago, they were trying to rev it repeatedly. its almost invisible at first look but staring at it longer, you would notice it. when i put my palm on top of it, i almost don't feel any pressure pushing up

some fuming is normal but it is still a bad sign. You might as well run the engine till it becomes hard to start or oil use becomes exessive then buy a second hand one. Diesel recons aint cheap

whatdya know...the engine is running quite smoothly after the oil change...could be a bad oil that i was using before...yeah, i think i should just wait till it really gets tired and all...it still starts with just a click right now. i once saw someone from here selling his brand new 4jb1t at ebay...i wonder if it was sold already...hmm...guess ill start scouting for a replacement as early as now...

I used to get some blowby once the oil got a little old ie 4000k but changed to a semi synthetic and now there is virtualy none. If blow by gets excessive you might be luck with just rings and bearings but you never know till you lift the head. Theroreticaly the crome linners should outlast several sets of rings but they can be eaten by short runs and high sulphur diesel which results in high amounts of sulphuric acid in the oil

My 92 Bighorn did this from the day I purchased it (80km) through to when I sold it (150km), but never had any real concern with it. If I had kept it, I was going to put an oil catch can on, as the Isuzu motors are well known to be heavy breathers.

ill check for blowby again later...sometimes its better not to know...because its sometimes depressing! hahaha. if it improves then ill just go get the top overhaul kit and proceed with it...can't afford both right now.

I got sick of getting depressed by the Bighorn, so I bought a Safari ;D If the dipstick wasnt fully pushed in, oil would be blown out there, and the rear seal leaked due to the pressure in the sump.

Geeves - can you tell me what this semi-synthetic oil is that you find good. Have found types of oil vary considerably in performance with the 4jb1T. For others - re problems experienced with breathing and pressuring of oil past seals etc - this is common to isuzus but simple to fix. Don't go selling your perfectly good diesel because of this. You won't find better amongst the Nissans or Toyotas though there are some good ones there too. You can fit a breather kit -about $225 club price and an hour to fit - (or perhaps a catch can system) and the problem is gone. There is a whole earlier post on this subject. This is the one issue with the 4jb1T but is quite easy to fix. - Mike

Currently useing Caltex Dello400 I switched to this when the Warehouse had it cheap at 37 for 5 l I have been told its a little good for an engine of this age but it works for me

i have used caltex delo gold before, i just forgot the rating...but my pickup smoked like barbecue thats why i switched to castrol (dealership oil) and now just switched to a new one again, shell rimula x 15w-40 rating and its starting to prove good for my 4jb1t! i think its still gonna go a long way despite my problems.haha...so is the said rating better compared to a 20w-40 for a pretty old engine? i also heard switching to a fully synthetic oil after using mineral for a long time is a no-no for the seals and stuff? i guess we all just have to know our engine and which engine oil it performs best eh...

interesting The local diesel shop is an agent for caltex oil and it was them that told me that I should use delo gold in preferance to delo400 as its cheaper and more suited to the older engine. I can buy delo400 from the warehouse cheaper than I can buy delogold from them so its not hard to work out which way to go. Ive heard the same about synthetic oils but dont know if its true. I started useing synthetics at 140000 and the rear main started leaking at 175000 but then my engine will be 16 in a couple of months so who knows.

mine's been sweating oil between the transmission and engine for quite a long time now and i don't think its getting worse...no drips on my drive way so far.
