Is it common for the 4JG2 to lunch the engine rear main seal. My sons bighorn after some rigerous activity over the weekend is pissing oil out between the block and the torque converter. In the order of 0.5 litres per hour. Has anyone experienced a rapid failure like this. North Otago Motors have indicated around $700 if it is the main seal, which appears about right to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

$45 for the seal, the rest is just labour to do the change.

seal was 82 at Shrodako begining of last year Add about 4 hours labour to drop the auto 4 things that can apear to be seal leaks but do not require the seal to be replaced Overfull sump This will frequently leak out of the rear seal. Mine does this even with a new seal leak in the tappet cover or oil filter will run down the impossible to see bell houseing and apear to come from inside. Non factory oil filters have been known to come loose Its not common but not rare either. If the engine is developing crankcase presure it will blow oil through the seals. With engine running open the oil filler. There should not be lots of smoke
