Hi all, I was wondering is there any other way to adjust the revs for cold starts. I have always used the hand throttle?

How cold are you talking about? On some really cold days (ie: below 10c) my MU idles a little rough just after startup, so I just hold the foot throttle on a little. Never used the hand throttle after the first couple of months of playing. cheers & welcome. Graham.

The 3.1 has a better glow plug setup mainly because its indirec injection and needs it. The 2.8 dosnt increase the glow time till 3 deg but realy needs it a little higher than this. Minewill start below 10 and either run rough or stall sraight away but always settles after 15 to 30 sec into normal running. Below 3 deg as long as you wai for the glow plug it runs fine straight away except hat the cold start device advances the timing and causes it till knock under any load for up to a minuite. It will start without waiing for the glow plug even wih frost on the bonnet.

thank guys, I own a 2.8ltr and live in Sydney. The reason i asked because my dad has a toyota td and in the morning. It starts with higher revs and then they drop.
My car starts first go with out any trouble and says started but the revs drop below normal idle
I guess i was wondering if that is normal??

sounds normal to me, I often wind the manual throttle up to around 1000rpm when its cold (around 3 deg like this morning) and let it idle for 5 min or so while I'm getting ready for work so heater is nice and warm by time i get outside. not really necessary as it will idle ok by itself, but is slightly lower than normal warm idle speed

Apparently if rpm is too low at start up when oil is thickest, the area under the piston doesn't receive enough oil spray from the big end bearings and can cause more wear.
I re-adjust my turbo timer, say 7-8 minutes, and go back inside while idling at 750rpm. Melbourne is no where near as cold as NZ, though we do get 0 degree mornings in winter.

Melborne has a more continental type climate so although it is probably warmer during the day I would expect your nights to be at least as cold as ours with the exception of our inland high country. So far we have onle had 1 very light frost in Wellington no need to scrape the windows. I normaly use the throttle to hold just above idle (850ish) til the oil presure comes up then reverse out of the driveway and drive normaly except that I dont rev past 2500 till the temp guage has started to move
