I've done this a couple of times and I don't think it caused any problems.
I was trying to make it to the petrol station but fell short. I just pumped the primer a few times (under the bonnet, son) and it found some fuel, enough to get me to the bowser & fill it up. Didn't miss a beat.
Cheers, G.

basicaly thats all there is to it but if Your still having problems Take the hose off the outlet from the fuel filter houseing and pump the priming pump on top of the filter This will make sure that you are getting fuel to this point If itheres an air lock it might take a fair bit of pumping Then reattach the hose pump up to a dozen times more (it gets hard to pump once primed) it all should be well.

Do not strip the injector pump unless you know what you are doing and have all the specialised equipment!!! I would be asking a local diesel shop for advice there is probably a simple fix that we dont know Let us know how you get on

I had a similar problem a while ago.Got very low on fuel and parked on a slope facing upward.Managed to get it to run [roughly] and made it to a service station where I filled it up.But afterwards it wouldn't start. The problem seems to be an empty fuel filter. The hand pump won't suck the fuel if the filter is empty. From memory I took off the fuel hose from the tank side of the filter and sucked the fuel through.NOT pleasant. If you have access to compressed air you can wrap a rag around an air gun and pressurize the fuel tank via the filler hole.Leave the fuel line on the filter inlet but take off the outlet. This should fill the filter. When there's fuel coming out the outlet the hand pump should fill the injector pump. You may need to take the return hose off the injector pump to be sure it's full. This should get the motor running although you may need to bleed the injectors Hope this helps.Harry.

Having called a few mechanics, some not at all helpful, some very helpfull, have worked out that its quite likely that lift pump is not happy, so have a few plans of attack, hav tried sucking fuel thru th filter but even when i can manage to achive a semi start it wont rev past like 700-800 rpm, so once the new fuel filter is on, i can asertain as to wether ive just been a complete tool, and had a clogged filter, of wheter the problem lies in my lift pump, will let you know as soon as i have it going,
Cheers for the help

I believe the proper procedure is actually according to the book (and my memory) is to losen the bleeder screw/bolt near the outlet of the fuel filter. Pump by hand to get fuel and no air. It will bubble and look like air after most of the air has gone. Tighten the bleed screw. Secondy if completly dry. i.e after overhaul is to then losen the blleder screw on the injector pump and again pump by hand to remove air. I'm trying to remember where that bleeed is... I think it's in the middle of the the four injector lines comming out of the injector. i.e. in an awkward spot. Best to check the book on this part. I suggest you try this full fuel bleed method.
