Hi guys and girls. Anybody can tell me how take the oil filter out of my MU 3.1 turbodiesel ''94??? From the side removing the weel dos not pass, from the top dosn't go truh because of the turbo, from the bottom the space between the two metal bars is too small. I could hummer it out but where can i find a smaller oil filter to put in? At the moment is got a Repsol. TNX

Correct filter from the Ryco range is Z402 This cross references easily to other filter brands.
Do you still have the factory exhaust? If it has been replaced the might not of left enough room to get the filter out. It is incredibly fiddly at the best of times but it should fit between the turbo and brake cylinder. Only time you cant get the filter out this way is if you have an intercooler

has it had any suspension mods? my 3.1 is a piece of p**s to change on now sagged suspension. also consider geeves' option of the z402 or a Sakura c1712 and measure the o/d of the new and compare it with the old. it may be that the current filter is bigger which means you can hack it out and a new one with a smaller o/d will fit sweet. even if you pay $11.00 for a new filter to sample if they are too stingy to help you, it is a cheap way to save frustration.

Hey Andrea.
I have the same issue with mine. Have to drop the front driveshaft by removing the 4 bolts connecting it to the front diff. Filter comes out easily then.

I run Valvoline filters they require to be slid back about 300mm before they will drop out between the front drive shaft, sway bar and chassis. This is on my Wizard that should be similar to the 3.1 Mu.

Yep, same with Bighorn. Slide it back 300 or so and it drops out no worries. That is with a Z402. To stop the residue oil spilling out of filter when it is released I have a length of thin hollow pipe sharpened at one end, which is then punched into the end of the filter allowing the oil to drain. Bloody brilliant!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I like the method posted a while ago useing a cut down milk bottle to catch the oil. I just let it go and wipe up later. Smells funny when it gets on the exhaust though

I too used to do that however it doesn't stop the oil from collecting in the chassis rail and then proceeding to drip out over the next week or so onto the garage floor.... Then the dog with shaggy paws stepped in the oil puddle and proceeded to walk throughout the house !!!! The carpets needed a steam clean anyway. ;D ;D ;D

Its a pity your not in Wellington I could of given a hand. You should get a white cat. They are good at getting the black oil from all those hard to clean places. (we own a white cat with black patches sometimes on one side sometimes the other he didnt have any black when we got him)

There are 2 filters for UBS69 (3.1D). A narrow long and a wide short. Both fit the boss. However, if you have the rhs jacked up the space to get it out narrows so you can't do it! My experience is to buy the narrow one and then there is no problem.

Hi guys I take it that the Ryco Z402 is the correct oil filter to use on my '96 Wizard 3.1 4JG2 engine. could someone also please tell me the sump oil capacity... Jock Jock, the Ryco website www.ryco.co.nz/(1vcr1tjokgaw2pjka5zhrjzw)/Default.aspx lists the Ryco Z554 as the correct filter for your Wizard. This is a longer narrower filter than the Z402 & easier to change by far. It is also harder to find & costs more. I use it in my 95 Bighorn & so far have only found the Ryco version & its Repco equivalent, a Sakura C-1535 & the OE part no 8971166670 versions. I believe there are others but not common & they also seem to be about $40.00 They have a dual stage filter, with part of it a bypass filter which is where the cost comes in. With this its probably reasonable to extend chages out a bit. The factory recommendation is 15W-40 at 10,000 kms. Like a lot of others I was changing mine at 5000 kms but have come to believe this is unecessary & have compromised on 8000 kms as should be OK. 6 litres per change is correct for this filter as well. Cheers, Steve.
