So, I changed my oil before driving from auckland to tupo for the weekend. Did an oil filter change aswell bought a Sakura filter and quarts fx5000 15w40 for the job. All went well and went down tupo into the bush, while i was down there i noticed the engine abit rattly, so i looked below the car thinking crap hope theres no oil pissing out. And there was... The oil filter had come loose, the oil was still 4 L or more left in the engine. So i made the trip home checked once half way that the filter hadnt come loose and the dipstick was reading almost full after 15 minutes with engine off. I get home dropping off my gf and go around the first corner and see a light a don't want to see come up, the oil light showed i looked at my oil gauge and its at 0.5. Stopped the car right there (oil filter must of come really loose last 15mins), checked the dipstick and nothing not a touch of oil, I found some GTX put in about 3.5 L before dipstick was at full. The car is running normal now but i think it sounds alittle different after that. Oh well learned my lesson, make sure you get ontop of your engine and tighten it proplery instead of left armed half assed!

opps hope no permanant damage done. It might be a good idea to drain the oil again which you will need to do to put the correct oil back in as gtx isnt diesel oil and filter the old oil through a handy towel looking for metal fillings just in case

Looks ok, was no filings. That gtx oil even though it says it can be used to diesel was so crap, my oil gauge was right at the top 9.0 during start up think the oil is just to thin and the motor was loud and rattly. Soon as I put in proper diesel oil the motor sounded better and the pil guage when cold idle was reading normal 8.5 but I've noticed it takes longer for the oil guage to pick up the pressure than before all of this... i was running that gtx for a week before i droped and changed oil. Oh well i'm young and learn as i go.

any oil is better than no oil in the short term. Apart from viscosity the only real differences are the way they handle contamination. Diesel oils tend to have a lot more detergent but a cheap petrol oil of the right grade wont do any harm as long as you change it within 1000km or so

I had a filter come loose on me once, so I vowed never again!!! I use a belt type filter remover to be able to get down there and undo my filters so once I have fitted the new one, it gets slightly nipped up with what I took the old one off with, don't go overboard though as the new oil will swell your seal which is supposed to lock the filter in place.
