today the oil light came on in the dash lights. The oil pressure gauge is running low around the 2 mark instead of the 6-7 mark anyone got any ideas what it could be?

The gauge reads differently to mine but the fact that it has changed and the oil light has come on which is a different sender says you have no oil pressure not a gauge fault. Do not drive it till fixed. In order of cost. Low oil, blocked filter, blocked strainer on the oil pump pick up,bad oil pump, bad bearings, blocked oil lines inside the block. The first 2 are relitivly easy and should be done before anything else. If you use a cheap oil to do an oil change it wont hurt the pocket as much if you have to pull the sump off to look at the other problems but you will have to change the oil again fairly quickly if it fixes the prob. After checking the oil pick up everything else is engine out and talk to a reconditioner although second hand engines might be cheaper. What milage have you got?

its just clicked over 230000. My mates old man had a quick look at it & believes it is the sender unit. he disconnected it then reconnected it & it was fine again- the light went off & the pressure went up to normal level again(up around the 6-7 mark) do you think thgis sounds like it was the problem?

might be the sender but you never know for sure. Keep an eye on it for now. If pressure drops when hot suddenly suspect the sensor but still dont drive till it cools down just to be safe. Sender shouldnt cost too much
