Hi, I just changed my fuel filter put it all back together. Turned the ingintion on then pumped the primer waiting until it got hard but never did.. Did that for about 5 minutes then started the engine, it started and gave it some pumps while running and i left it to idle after about 3 minutes it started running rough tryed pumping it abit then 5minutes it died.. Wouldn't start again so I filled up the filter by hand topping it up then putting it back in and starting it again but same problem.. So i figured its sucking in air from the primer, I had a look and found big bit of rust holding the trap door on the primer pump stuck open, cleaned that out, filled it up again started the car. It went and I could hear the car fuel pump picking the revs up while it was pumping then revs went down,, then it would rev up again with the fuel pump.. But it shortly died after about 3 minutes.. So I'm buggered if i know what the hell the problem was, it was working fine before hand..
Can anyone help me with this?

Tryed again with the old filter back on, same thing happens but this time when the motor stopped I could hear hissing, and i think its coming from behide the filter to all those little rubber tubes attached to the little plastic boxes? i don't know what those are but one of the top rubber hoses is in a bad state its cracked where it attaches.

Still no luck, I have another question. Is the overflow valve the little metal trap door flap that sits inside, its where the large bit of rust was lodged keeping it open. But now it dosn't shut close flat it looks a tad slight bent like it dosnt sit fully flat/closed. Is it ment to? It would require me bending it to fix it, so just wanted to check first. I'd hate after a tow trip to the mechanic turns out thats all it was!! lol
Cheers.

haha yeah what a waste of a day, planned to go up north and I knew I needed a fuel filter change thought it would be a 30minute job. Anyway its pretty straight forward it was my first go at it, but I think i just ran into a fault/damage with my pump. It had a tonn of rust in it, not sure when the last time it was changed.

This may sound dumb but did you open the bleed screw on the filter housing before you pumped the primer? Harry.

Yeah tryed that, it didn't work. Could the whole thing not be working because of that bit of metal inside that looks like a trap door, does that need to be closed on its own, because its partly open when I have the top housing off looking at it.
Thanks.

I didnt know there was a bleed screw Ive always taken the hose off of the pump and primed it there Never a problem. The filter assembly is common to a lot of jap diesels so you shouldnt have too much trouble getting anouther one at a wreckers. Then its just a matter of bleeding it one step at a time first at this bleed screw second at the pump end of the hose from the filter to the pump then if needed at each injector

I took it to the mechanic. Got it towed by a mate for free. In the afternoon the mechanic told me the primer pump had blown, they put in a 2nd hand pump part is $50 bucks. Its working, I asked for a fuel timing check, its not done, because they said blue smoke is coming out and its the rings not the fuel timing.. The bill is $145. They told me I needed 1.5 L of oil, they filled it up, cost me $15 on the bill for the oil.. I get home check the oil myself, after 30minute wait.. The oil dipstick is almost double off the fill line.. oh my fking god. The water seperator sensor one of the wires was still disattached 5minute soliding iron job.. still not done.. And this mechanic was through work, another retail shop.. I'm so pissed. I could of bought that part for 30 bucks and did it myself,, and i did an oil change 2 weeks ago. and they fking over fill my car by 1.5 liters.. oh i'm so pissed.

By the sounds of things its a good thing they didnt do the fuel timing. You need to take this up with the garage. Its ok for a garage to add 20 to a 30 part for courier fees and mark up and the other 95 is about right for 1.5 hours labour but the oil is inexcusable Breaking the wire is bad workmanship but it is a fiddle to get at Still they should be fixing if you trust them to do it. Best trick Ive seen for removeing the water separator from the wiring is to unbolt the whole assembly from its mount then hold the separator still and unwind the filter from it. This stops the wires twisting up which is what broke them. Then you can also fit the filter on the bench. Turns a 40 minuite knuckle scraper into 15 minuite easy job. You still get diesel all over your feet though

There should be some bullet connector terminals that allow you to unplug the wire about 6 inches down. Right in an awkward spot, can be a fiddle as the cable is short. :-)

Awkward spot doesnt quite describe it on the bighorn. Can see the conector but cant touch it with one finger let alone the 2 hands needed to unplug. Not sure how useful it is. In Nz Ive never found evidence of water in my fuel for the 11 years and 110000km Ive had the bighorn
