Hi. My 1998 Wizard (4JX1 3.0L diesel) has severe misfiring and power loss when going up hills. It cruises fine on the flat, but after about 8 seconds of increased load when climbing a hill, the misfiring kicks in. There does not appear to be any increase in exhaust fumes when this happens. The symptoms seem to indicate a problem with fuel supply? The diesel filter was replaced 12 months ago. Are there any simple things that could be the source of the problem that I could check out before I start spending big money on mechanics? (A diesel mechanic I spoke to did not reckon that injectors seals would cause this problem). Thanks in advance. Bruce G

I would be saying fuel filter? Perhaps not if your filter is 12 months old. But if you have or had fuel bug it could still be the filter. Certainly it sounds like a lack of fuel flow. Fine normally, untill under increased fuel demand it gives up.... classic fuel block or restriction.

I replaced fuel filter but the problem persisted intermitently, sometimes severe, sometimes slight so went to the mechanics last week. After checking the fuel feed was OK they took the injectors out and found that one of the injector O-ring seals had blown. Now that this is fixed the engine's running fine. A happy ending.
