hi :)ive got a problem with my 2.8 t d bighorn 1991 i have owned it for 10 years been 100% reliable just brake parts belts etc required it always had a diesel knock [harshness] when started from cold but would suddenly stop and engine was sweet after acouple of mins it is now like it all the time as though the pump timing is advanced does the pump have a advance mechanism and how does it work cheers merrick

On the thermostat houseing there are 3 wires. Remove the one closest to the right and see if it makes a difference. (this is the control for the cold start and should only work below 5C water temp)

A thought - have a quick look also at the lower pulley on end of crankshaft. When this loosens and starts slogging out the the keyway it makes a hell of a knocking noise. Check to see if it is moving in and out as it rotates, or has a slight wobbling motion. Otherwise sounds v much like diesel pump tooo far advanced for some reason.

Over here they are still quite common for a 20 year old car Shows the strength of the breed. Rust is starting to be an issue especially for those that drive on beaches I imagine the same would be true in Britain where they salt the roads in winter. Motors are good for 400000 if looked after. Even if they fail you can still get all the parts and even brand new engines (made in China under license)
