Hello
Im reasonably new to having a 'proper vehicle' so please bear with me as Im picking things up as I go along.
Anyway, Ive had my 1995 3.1 MU with 85K km for 8 months now and its been running like a dream. Last week whilst en route to an extended hunting trip in the hills I was passing in 4th to get a bit of initial acceleration and the engine cut out, things went a bit soggy and a disturbing amount of black smoke came out the back (this happened 2 hours later whilst passing again). I would estimate I was doing about 3,800ish revs at the time. Admittedly the vehicle was loaded up with excess luggage and my mate had two rather stodgie pies which probably didnt help. Thankfully this problem sorted itself out and I was able to continue on my way and return a week later with excess tahr meat.
I recently changed the oil to Morris if this makes any difference.
Since then its been fine. Any ideas or advice as to my issue.
Regards
Burty

sounds like the rev limiter in the fuel pump. This gives exactly those symptoms when you try to overrev. Only thing is though is that it should be set to 4200 not 3800. This means either your rev counters out, the rev limiter is out of adjustment or you misread the rev counter. Most likly choise 1 or 3 so just avoid exceding the revs indicated.

Morris oil? They are well known for their steam oil range... To avoid the black smoke I suggest to not fire so heavy, 3 shovels under the brick arch and one in each back corner of the firebox usually does the trick, keeps the fire bright and hot, makes good steam and only a little black smoke.

Was that pine, manuka or best west coast anthacite? My moneys on the rev limiter. Several times Ive changed down one to many to get a little more power and left a nose print on the windscreen.Everything goes from full go to full stop very quick.

Cheers Geeves - I would be inclined towards the latter of your suggestions - I shall be keeping the revs (and boiler pressure) down when overloaded from now on.
One thing I discovered on the trip is that a MU beats a Mitsubishi Triton hands down when it comes to 'getting places'.
