i have a dumb question again which im sure anyone here could answer to...
Do diesel engines really need to be warmed up? When starting up in the morning, how long do you leave your engine running at idle before you drive?
is it ok to start it up, wait for the lights on your panel to disappear then zoom away? or it is recommended to leave it running for a while?
i ask because i can really notice the difference of running on a cold engine
this on a tropical weather...

In warm weather which I suspect you get all the time (currently a warm 7C outside here over the weekend it droped below 0C) just start and let it idle till the oil presure comes up then drive off Dont over rev the engine till the temp gauge reads normal though. The engine should be up to temp in around 10 min or so if it takes longer your thermostat might need replacing. In cold weather I still do much the same but on the 2.8 there is a temperature sensor that makes the glow plugs stay on longer and advances the injector timing if the coolant is below 3C The 3.1 has a similar setup but it is graduated from around 10C downwards

ok, since we're dealing with temp, does yours read the same during daytime and night time? i notice that my gauge goes down at night unless the traffic is really bad...shouldn't stay the same? mine only reaches the normal level (which is almost halfway through the panel) during lunch time driving, other than that, it stays somewhere below the 1/4 reading.
is this normal? some say it should stay the same all the time, others say its normal.

Since you live in the tropics this might be normal its hard to tell but 1/4 to half gauge is fairly normal depending on outside temperature type of driving etc. It could be worth checking the radiator, fan and thermostat though even if only for peace of mind

I dont think its a dumb question, I have often wondered the same. I let mine warm up til there is movement on the guage, usually a few minutes, and then i crawl off until at temp. my guage the same all the time, normal, almost ½ way through the guage, regardless of ambient temperature. does the ususal heat up a little when under huge load. i notice a definite increase in diesel rattle when it is very cold outside

Ive heard it said on here that the rings and pistons are splash lubricated so letting the engine idle from cold is not such a wise idea. Ive alway let mine idle till oil pressure comes up then driven gentaly (not over 2000rpm) till its mostly warmed up to normal

my temp. gauge is slightly lower at night (it was not like this before, anyway, don't really see much effect)...it only went up to 3/4 high one time when i left it idle for an hour under the scorching noon time heat...probably around 37-38C.
