Hi All . Just a small question to ask .i have a very tiny oil leak coming from the seal/gasket on the oil pan under the truck.it looks like when i bought the truck it had been given a bit of silicone to stop the leak as a fix.Only reason am asking how to fix it is cos when parked up on drive way it will leave a few drips of oil here and there so have to make sure i park in same spot so not to make a game of join dot to dot out of the marks . I asked someone a little while ago about it and he said to just put more silicone on the hole and leave it as he reckons it s amajor job taking the diff and all that messy parts out to remove the pan cover.is this true or is it simple to remove and replace gasket .Was quoted $27nz at repco .many thanks in advance . Neil

What truck do you have? You might find it hard to clean the area well enough to get the silicon to stick. I had the same problem not long ago, but the silicon was put on due to the fact that one of the sump screws was stripped and so it wouldnt seal properly. Mine (92 Bighorn) was only a 20min job (although I let the oil drain for an hour so it was easier to clean). I just had to remove the cross member to get the sump off.

Couldnt have been easier, I just removed the 4 bolts (2 either side) and it was off. Didnt even need to jack it up. I would look at giving each of the screws holding the pan on a very small tweak to see if they all still have thread in, as I found my damaged one last, by which time I had broken the gasket seal. This meant wasting a new gasket because it was later taken to a mechanic to heli-coil the damaged thread!

PS, make sure the oil isnt leaking from higher up ie rear engine seals

Is it the small steel sump at the bottom or the large one bolted to the motor? The large one doesn't have a gasket, just sealant.Check that the oil isn't running down from the bottom of the dipstick tube.

is the one that is above the crossmember bar ..so if you crawl under the truck from the side it is there above you. Only reason i am asking on how to get it fixed is cos i dnt want to take to a mechanic/garage and get charged $100's for a job that can be done at home as they may want to say this had to come out and and that had to coem out and then remove this part to get to it .if i remove the cross member bar will the truck drop down as that holds the truck up doesnt it ?

I managed to take mine out without anything collapsing ;D My sump pan (the one with the sump plug for removing oil) needed a gasket, some earlier(??) models may not have.

When you look at this crossmember youl see that it doesnt hold any weight. Its job is to hold the lower suspension mounts in place by sideways force. It comes off easy as but dont drive without it in place.
