Well, blatting down the motorway yesterday and all of the sudden things got a bit noisy (briefly), then the truck shuddered and started decelerating VERY rapidly, oil light on and temp in the red. right on the on-ramp to the waimak bridge... those in Chch will know thats not an ideal place to have a total catastrophic engine failure However I managed to get the truck off the road just before the bridge... light traffic luckily. Anyway... I think I need a new motor... or what are these like to rebuild once they've blown up? I'm thinking its dumped the water (possible blown or rusted frost plug?) and overheated. It was totally water-free in the radiator when I got it to the workshop, but apart from that I haven't looked too hard at it. Failing that, anyone got a spare 2.8td motor? Steve

If is cessed then you may get away with pistons and sleave kits which are readily available from what i've heard.
I have 2 2.8 motors sitting here, they are just plain motors, no starter, air con, or alternator, but one is cessed solid and the other one has blown rings but i couldn't guarranty this is the only problem.
There are usually a few of these motors going on trademe regulary so good luck
What are we talking about!?!?!? Nows the perfect time to put a v8 in it!!!!!

Bad luck Steve - caught mine just in time a while back after a hose burst and the temp was rocketing - changed every hose after that. Keep an eye on Buy Sell Exchange again - could be a cheapie Isuzu there with a reasonable motor and bits that could be sold to pay for most of the job.

Yeah, fortunately not the MOOOO... it was the bighorn that has ceased to be Means I'm back to driving the old Hyundai excel again... oh well... Have a BSE, going to have a ring around tonight... the stuff on trademe seems excessive. Can buy an older MU for $2k, might do that and wreck it out...

Just a quick question re: the 2.8 and 3.1s... are they interchangeable... If I buy a short motor 3.1 can I bolt the 2.8 accessories on it and make it go? Just possibly found a 3.1 that might be a better bet than the 2.8s, since everyone seems to want over $1000 for a 2.8 motor... which is virtually what I paid for the whole vehicle running reged and woffed... MattMU in Perth had a 2.8 89 MU with a 3.1 motor he fitted himself on a manual box. He then bolted a 2.8 turbo on it so I would hazzard a guess it's possible. J

yes its been done before. You need the front exhaust pipe as this is different to clear the oil filter as this is different and I think you have to use your flywheel but not sure and you have to pay your favorite certifier his cut. 3.1 would go nice in the irmshire as its 200kg lighter thant the later shape

Ah yes, the cert man... forgot about that. Ok, the truck is back on trademe as a whole for one more shot then its out the door in pieces... I still have the V6 one here to rebuild, finish the MU and get that cert'd and legal, rebuild my Hilux, build a new workshop and make dinner before the wife gets home... I think thats enough on my plate Steve
