according to a leaflet Ive just picked up from the local gas station we are finaly getting the decent diesel.Sulphur is to be lowered to 500 parts per million in June and then to 50ppm in early 2006. Good for the envoiroment and suposedly good for the inside of the engine but they are already warning for possible injector pump seal problems in diesel engines older than 1995. a quote from the leaflet "If you have a pre-1995 vehicle with a type VE injector pump that has never been serviced you may wish to consider a maintanence overhaul and seal replacment before lower sulphur diesel is introduced to avoid unplanned downtime. Once you have had your injector pump serviced and the seals replaced the new seals should last for six to eight years" Im only the messenger

I've been running my 3.1 Mu on low sulphur from Gull for over six months and it runs like a dream. It's an early 90's vehicle. On occasions when I've had to resort to other more common brands the exhaust emits more smoke and "stinks".

Even the Gull diesel dost meet the new standards from 2006. They can currently sell diesel here as low sulpur that isnt allowed in any other developed country in the world This dosnt say much for the stuff the rest of us get

Just been down to local Challenge garage and picked up blurb sheet on new fuel. Then rang my diesel garage (Gasson Mtrs - Chch) about the new low sulphur diesel and the need for replacement seals. He said they get warnings periodically in the trade and they just consider its the oil companies trying to cover their own butts. Said periodically the top seal? in the injector pump goes and it costs about $150-200 to have done, and a bit more if the lower seals go too. Confirmed our earlier Isuzus are fitted with the pumps made by Denso or Zexel as mentioned in blurb sheet. Told me not to worry about racing in for replacement seals straight away, but keep an eye on it for the future and replace if leakage or wear is detected. Sounds fair enough. Great to hear we will be getting better fuel at last. If you think the fuel is bad on our diesels, try running 2-stroke dirt bikes. My sons often have to get new spark plugs after just one week's use - they keep a stock of them as the fuel is so bad. Mike A.

I have been told by an operator of the Gasoline Alley franchise that the gull Diesel is imported already refined from Singapore, and is the lowest Sulphur content diesel available in NZ, also that it meets the new standards

Last used a Gull station in Tauranga 2 years ago as they dont exist down here yet. At that time they advertised there diesel as 600 parts a milion which was 3 times better than the diesel sold by anyone else in NZ but still poor by international standards If they have already improved to meet the new standard then all the better
