i have a 2.8td that makes a tapping noise just like a noisy tappet but i have just done the tappets . the noise seems to be coming from the rear of the engine .i have heard of a cold advance - retard system that knocks when cold ,does anyone know how to access this

On the thermostat housing there are 3 wires. The one on the drivers side controls this. Remove it and the engine will knock like crazy with any load on the engine. If it only started when doing the tappets then I would double check the tapets. Other possible culprits are exhaust manifold leak. leak at the EGR pipe or the expensive broken ring or worn gudgeon pin.
