Has anyone come across an electonically injected version of the 4JG2? My 1997 manufactured 3.1TD Wizard has a "computer" below the radio stack that my mates 1996 Wizard doesn't. Any ideas?

Yes its true the later 4jg2 did use electronics to control the mechanical injector pump. Dont know anything more except slightly better ecconomy.

I have heard that the Airbag system is located under the radio - Not sure though

If you have a diesel EFI or electronic injection pump the engine will also have a commencement of injection sensor located somewhere to read the off the crankshaft! Also possibly it will have a needle lift sensor on one of the injectors, usually the rearmost(it's just a ring which contains a small coil) If whilst running the crank signal is lost the computer gets the TDC position from this sensor until you shut off the engine and then will be unable to get it started again until the cranksignal is restored! Most modern jap diesels have gone to the common rail system for diesel EFI whereas the Europeans have advanced a step further and gone with unit injector EFI! Unit injectors will be the new wave to come and take over all diesels soon as the efficiency and powergains are tremendous! Check out the Volkswagen group as they are the innovators of the small diesel engines and are far ahead of the rest with their designs!

You might want to fit those off the 3.0 l engine with the HEUI system! Nah!! Stick with the good ol' trusty mechanicals, much less goes wrong!! 50% or more of problems with diesel vehicles these days are late models with diesel electronics! I work for VW and half of the cars they sell are the late model golf TDI's and diesel Touaregs(R5 and V10) and all electronic problems that can happen do! Stick with the old, nothing wrong with the occasional big black cloud when you put the power on! ;D
