Hows this for up and down fuel economy: After putting the big exhaust on driving from Brisbane to Nanango (about 160Ks) recorded 11.14 KPL, next tank 6.7KPL, next 8.5KPL. So I changed the air filter and started using Nulon diesel injector cleaner, only one I could find at the time, anyway next tank but to normal 9.7 KPL. A couple of up and downs, towing the camper, but there to saw a 9.0 KPL. Went for a drive to Sunny coast and re fueled at Beerwah on the way back, probably did 120Ks highway and the rest around town, no traffic lights here, for a total of 272Ks used 21.49 liters, so got 12.65KPL, 7.9L/100 or 36 MPG. ;D I have seen a couple of 11s but 12.65 and I have recorded every liter of fuel that has gone into this truck (the green one MU) and I always fill to the top. Now I wonder what she will take on next fill up. So I thought I would let you all know and see if anyone else has had the same predicament. Cheers Bruce. PS the Wizard still gets 9.5 KPL every fill.

Could it be the quality of the fuel when you filled up at a different place? ?

Could be bubbles in the tank. Some brands of diesel are worse for this than others. In NZ BP and Mobile have an additive that stops foaming The others didnt last time I checked. The foam will temporarily block the breather preventing you getting the tank completly full. Only way to realy tell the usage is over large distances and bigg fills that tend to average out better because of this. Try the ecconomy over your next 500km+ trip

Hi Graham, filled up at Woolys don't think there fuel is any better than the rest, from I've heard probably worse. Hi Allan have filled her up at this servo (Shell) in town many times and am very particular about it being full all the time, but as you said the next fill will tell the story, but ge would be nice if I got some where near that from now on. She does not blow no where near the black smoke as she use to, so Iam hoping it is the injector cleaner, here wishing anyway ;D Cheers Bruce.

I use the Nulon stuff every now and then It seems to work although the new lowish sulphur diesel doesnt smoke as much anyway. Now at just under 20000km +speedo error (8%) +-jap inport adjustment on original injectors. On a trip sticking religiously to NZ speed limit (100kph) 33.5 MPG or 8.5L/100KM can be got from the bighorn but it has the airodynamics of a shed compared to the Mu

Another factor I forgot about, had my 80 year old Aunty on board for some of that, so probably a bit sedate, but normally Iam up it, as Annie say 52 going on 22 hahaha Cheers Bruce

I reckon Geeves is on the right track.
The fuel consumption in mine only varies by up to 0.4 litre per 100k's, unless I'm doing serious low range or sand work.
Doesn't matter how I drive on the road (like myself or a granny), it makes no difference to the consumption (12.5L/100k). We'll see how that changes on my first tank since having the injectors done.

Just did fuel check on my 88 bighorn swb 4JB1T and it did 9.4L per 100ks on the road cruising at 105-110kph (30mpg), and 8.6L per 100ks (33mpg) in and out of town from country. This is with motor tuned to 155hp, and is absolutely consistent over the last 110,000ks I've had it. I run Wynn's EDT diesel treatment every tank, and haven't had injectors done at over 205,000ks.
Incidentally of 7 club trucks (87 - 92 models) running the Wynns EDT this last 12 months to keep fuel pump seals supple, none of them have needed seal jobs with the new lo-sulphur diesel. Seems to work well.

The good ole 4jb1 is definatly an ecconomical motor. Im starting to think it might be the best of the bunch to the point that Ive included pre97 Rodeo utes in my search for a new family car. The bighorn will be staying but its getting a little hard to keep clean

Definitely one of best diesel engines to emerge from Japan, and regarded as best isuzu motor by huge Isuzu/holden dealer outfit in chch. Used more and more now as repower unit in landrovers, even toyotas etc these days.
Talking to a mate who runs a big diesel servicing company here yesterday and he said they seldom see the 2.8s in with motor problems before they have run up big ks. Have no particular weakness - apart from some benefitting from breather or catch can which is quite easy to do.
RE fuel consumption, have done many long trips with 4wd clubmates in all sorts of trucks where we usually stop for diesel together, and 2.8 is always the most economical. Toughest on diesel is the safari turbo - the subject of much humour - but otherwise a good engine.

My mu has new diesel pump and new injectors but still low cilinder kompression and it uses around 10 lit/ 100 km on the motorway at speeds 110-120 km/h and around 8 lit/100km in the city (if I'm shifting gears undre 2500 revs). With new pump and injectors I didn't gain any more economy. Dragan
