Hey guys, I have just mounted a separate alternator above the air con pump on my Mu. It is from a Mitsubishi l200 petrol Ute and has 2 wires coming from it. The 4JB1 alt has 3 wires and I was told that one maybe to drive the rev counter?? Has anyone done this sort of thing before and how hard is it to wire in? I have done this because I am sick of killing the original alt as it is way too low for water crossings etc. I have left the original there because of the vacuum pump plus the other is 50 % larger so is better for the electric winch. Thanks Roger

You may get away with it if the water is clean, but the muddy swamp water we often deal with is a killer.

dam, so whats the best plan of action for hitting the mud holes and not buying a new alternator every time?

2 choises. Dont hit the mud holes or buy new alternators frequently. If the alt light comes on and does not go out after a few seconds out of the wet unplug all the wires to the alternator. This will save the stator windings and probably allow your alternator to be rebuilt.

Just read the first post properly. The rev counter does not come from the alternator. Mine worked ok with the alternator disconected. You have to fit a diode between the second and third wire but not sure on details Thats an inovative solution to the problem. Ive been looking for an idea like this as I didnt realy want to loose the air con. Will it fit around an intercooler and where did you get the bracket from?

Yes it has an intercooler on it, in this photo you can just see the edge of the intercooler. The bracket is so simple all it is is a piece of angle iron 40 x 40 x 6 x about 45mm long with a steel tube welded on the edge to mount the alt to. The bracket screws to the 10mm threaded hole already found on the aircon bracket. I also have a small bit of 25 x 3 mm strap running from the back of the alt mount down to the spare upper rear aircon pump mount just for a bit more stability. The tensioner is bolted to a small piece of angle welded on top of the original alt bracket and the belt lines up with the front pulley. But be warned I have a 2" body lift and have just enough clearance under the bonnet for this mod. Works brilliantly .
