Sender in the tank. Mine did that soon after buying. Took the sender out of the tank and the wire wound resiter that operates it all was broken. I looked at all sorts of cheap cowboy repairs before spending $150 at a wreckers for a new sender. Its one of the easiest parts on the Isuzu to get at

what is required to get access to the sender? mine has just started playing up and reading empty at random times. might replace it some time.

Its on the front of the tank and held in with about 6 small screws. Make sure the tank is well below half and be ready with a bucket just in case. There is a drain on the tank if you prefer

Before pulling the fuel sender out check all the wiring... it sounds like a bad connection rather than a bad sender. Mate and re-mate any connectors to clean up the contacts etc
