Hi Chris,
I got a:
Hitachi Alternator, 12 volt 80 amp model: ALT7055R-80 Cost:$415 incl GST
From: Auto Electrics Australia ph: 3277 4566 16 Hampshire Street, Archerfield
Was fitted to the 2.8, but I think is same for 3.1 have to confirm this.

That's where to get it from, I have the same alternator on my truck and its identicle to yours chris. Just check the mounts are offset and not horizontally opposed like mine. You can use both as I have the latter but you then need to modify the slide bracket. Check out the front view of ALT7055R Hitachi Alternator compared to the front view of the ALT7080 Hitachi Alternator. On this page: www.aea.com.au/shopping/index.html?target=Alternator_Units.html

Thanks guys, i only manage to find a post a while ago regarding the topic, sorry I could not find the 80amp one that frank says he has but I find that same unit but its 70 amps. I hope the bracket mount fabrication is easy for a mechanic as I will have to have them to fit in. The 70 amp unit should be good enough for a duel battery system in the near future? Thanks again guys

Mine is 70 Amp, Chris I think the number of unit does not reflect its output as with the ALT7080 I have. With the bracket I drilled a hole nearer the end and filed it out to extend the slot which allows you to tension the belt correctly. It has plenty of meat in the bracket to do this, or you can take the bracket to a wreckers and find a similar but longer one. J

Well i just rang them (AEA) up, no are no ALT7055R-80 in oz and will not be for about 2 months. Yes frank was right that this model is an 80 amp unit and apperantly just bolts on the 4JG2 engine thence the 55R-80 numbering.
But they do have a 120 amp ($650) unit that bolt on the 4JG2 and so looks like will have to get that one. 2 months without my and public transport fees would outset the additional $250 plus will help allot i the duel set up and otheres.
I will let you know how it goes and model numbers should anyone else want this "BIG BAD BOY" of an alternoter.

Thats not bad for 120 A and would sure run heaps of spotties with that baby!!
Hey J with the other alt, could you not just use a smaller/longer Alt belt instead of modifying the bracket. Repco etc have a slide tester that you can use to measure belts etc to find the right length if the need ever arises!
Anyway sounds like you got it sorted. Just glad I have a spare, but my origional is doing great, years of abuse and still pumping out the amps!!
Matt.

OK people the alternator is on and running fine. It was a straight "NO MODS BOLD ON UNIT", only hard thing about it all is getting it in.
Justine I will email you with all details on the 3 alternator models (55, 80 and 120 Amp) that bolt straight on the 3.1 4JG2 MU (I am sure that 2.8 is the same), so tha that you can place on your site.
If anyone can't wait, let me know.
Cheers Chris
