Had to get a 2nd hand alternator quickly and now the vacuum pump has sprung a leak, apparently. Anyone know what's involved in fixing this, perhaps where and how much it would cost? Cheers Stu

Check the hoses etc first. The pump is available on its own as a part but I dont thinck you can get parts for it. You could swap the pump from your old alternator

Ah! Fingers crossed it might be a hose. Unfortunately, the mechs kept the old alternator . Needless to say, I won't be having them do any other work than fix this problem, from now on as they also said they changed all the belts but my new mech said they still need to be changed......!

We have an organisation over here that loves to deal with problems like that for a small fee. Its called the Mongrol Mob and you might guess that being a little late paying the fee is not a good idea.

This isn't a stupid question! The vacuum pump moves a lot of oil too. Have you got an air leak in (i.e. no vacuum) or an oil leak out (oil pissing over the floor)??

Good point Its more likly to be spewing oil if faulty than loose vacume not that there is much to loose. If yur haveing brake problems then only expect 3 pushes of the peddle at quick repitition (cadence brakeing) before its all over for a second or 2. On the off road training I did we were shown cadence braking as a method of speed control for when everything else had failed The 4th push needs both feet. If there is an actual vacume problem It will be a hose off. Ive had one come off 2 years after it was last touched. It had been sent round the wrong side of the air con so very tight

I believe the oil is blowing all over the motor, however I haven't looked and am only taking the word of my new mechanic. I have noticed some oil leaks under the car when parked. I thought I had noticed braking not what it used to be but put that down to new pads and rotors. It's going back to the original fitter of the alt tomorrow, so let's see what he has to say for himself!! Apparently, they also forgot to put the bottom retaining bolt back in so that the alternator doesn't move around....

If you have lost vacume the brake warning light will come on every time you touch the brakes and you will nearly need both feet to operate them even slightly. More likly the new pads and rotors bedding in

Well, luckily it was only a split hose running from the sump to the VP. They just trimmed it up and hey presto, apparently! Let's see how it goes now!?
