Hi,
Does anyone know how the glowplugs are setup on these things? I have an 89 bighorn and the glowplug light only comes on for about half a second before i start up, and even after having the engine and turbo rebuilt just b4 xmas she still smokes a bit at idle i have a funny idea that the glowplugs aint working.
Do these only do the primary glow or is there an after glow as well until up to temp?.
Any help appreciated.
Carl.

All 4jb1 engines smoke at idle a little bit so I wouldnt worry about that. The glow plug circuit is controled by the sensor on the right hand side of the thermostat housing Disconect this and the glowplugs should stay on for over a minuite but you cant just disconect this as it also has some effect on pump timing. Most auto sparkys fit a fixed timer for glow plug issues but the direct injection motor will stat ok without glowplugs unless it is very cold although it will smoke more untill it warms a bit. My glow plug cct hasnt worked properly in 6 years and I have stated it in sub 0 temps many times.

Im with Alan the 2.8 being direct injection need no glow at all!! Its mainly indirect injection engines that need glow. But anyway, I changed my 2.8 motor for a 3.1 years ago and I needed more glow that the 2.8 would allow. By disconnecting the temp (not the dash guage but the yellow wire is glow) sender the glow is maximum. Yes there is still glow happening after the light goes out, the light is purely a starting limiter and for about 30 seconds the glow continues.
I doubt VERY much that that is your running probs (?) if any exist. All diesels will smoke (grey) puffs till they reach operating temp and then seal up properly and run better etc!
What you are describing is pretty normal all things considered, but if it truly is excessive, then I would look elsewhere than the glow plugs.
Pretty easy to test them if it will set your mind at ease. Just clip a voltmeter to the glowplug line and see if power is supplied at start and few a few to 30 seconds (depending on temp) after start.
Goodluck
Matt.

Gday, Most Jap Glow Plugs work on a stepped voltage, ie, They will get 12 volts initialy for starting then drop back to 10 volts for a while then 8 for the last period. You should hear an audible click at end of the 12 volt period and this when you hit the starter. This click may not sound at the same time as the light goes out.
On the 4JX1 Engine, there is no light or any other indication that its even got glow plugs. They go for a few seconds only then stop.
Cheers

re 4jx1 the glow plugs will stay on untill a temp sensor allows them to go off. Auto sparkys have changed many a good alternator on these due to car being used for short trips and flatening the battery. This is purly for emmision reasons

Thanks guys. I disconnected the sensor and the light stayed on for a lot longer although i didnt notice any difference in smoke (was dark by then).
she always starts fine but the smoke at idle does bug me a bit.. I talked to my engine builder and he thinks she's not quite bedded in yet (6000km since rebuild) as i have been running her on Delo 400 Synthetic oil, he recomends running on a basic mineral oil for another 10,000k's to seat the rings in a bit better. ill give this a go and see if shes any beter in 6 months time ;D
