Hey I just brought a 91 mu 2.8td and with the charge relay in it makes a electrical burning smell and the batt fuel timing belt lights flash on an off now and then. with it out it seem all good. Any ideas what this relay does?

Enquirerys on mine dont sound good for yours or mine. The most likly reason for the charge relay to go is burnt stator windings in the alternator. Alternator costs about 600 and a good auto sparky can change it in 1.5 hours but most take twice this. Mines going to be getting a petrol alternator mounted where the air con is now leaving the old alternator just as a vacume pump,

I have just had this problem as of yesterday. i have a 96 MU and my AC panel has no power. but when this happened i found that my AC is holding the throttle on so i have slightly higher revs.
where do we get a charge relay from? and how are they different for each model?
I have a 96 3.1L TD

If your having problems in this area get along to your auto sparky. Like Geeves has mentioned, the relays are usually only about $40, but this may not be the problem. My friend has an Isuzu Elf 150 (early 90's 4jb1) that has been having similar problems over the last couple of weeks. It turns out that it was/is an intermittent problem with a diode in the alternator and because he/we have been naffing around trying to fix it, it has also damaged the rotor or stator windings (not sure which) this part new costs about $180. In the course of trying to find the problem we at least found that most relays and other electrical parts were very similar to my Mu (92 4jb1t). Not sure where you are, but you'll sometimes find a reasonable 2nd hand alternator on Trademe but take the associated risks of 2nd hand parts.

i have tested all the relays and i dont think they are the issue. i only had 1 allowance in the fact that it started working again.
does anyone know a good sparky in southern brissy?

I wouldnt trust trade me alternators. Too many people like me doing the selling.(just joking) The risk that they are like the winch I bought is just too high. If Harry hadnt found me a second hand motor for that winch i would of had to through away 500. (you cant ask for refunds after leaving it in the garage unused for 3 months)

well it looks like its just due to age.... and the shaft is worn.. should come out around the $250 to $300 range for a fully rebuilt alternator.
better than $800 i say....

In the end I got anouther alternator from pic apart for 45 with the charge relay. Pic a part is good cost wise but you take it out yourself and absolutly no garentees. Everything else was going to require mucking about with the pulleys and wireing. I have seen a couple that have been done in Wellington. All that is needed to mount the alternator is to bolt the front bolt to the aircon bracket and make an adjustable bracket for the other front mount. Its still on my list of to dos but an old Mu alternator ended up cheap and quick

yea best option with these alternators is rebuild the one youve got or a new 1 or if you have 1 thats workin mint (2nd hand ) i would reccomend doing the reg before you put it in as what normally happens is the reg blows overloading the rectifier(diodes) cause them to blow and also stuffing the charge realy at the same time its a common fault with isuzus i see heaps of them as an auto sparky

Its in the fuse box I think its labled. Problem is though that the chargew relay only blows when the alternators shot.
