After cleaning alternator i noticed it needed a little rev for the dash lights to go out.But now they stay on.The glow plug light goes off and the handbrake light goes off.The oil light goes off but the fuel light ,battery, and the water light stay on and the volt gauge shows no charge even though it was charging before. And the timing belt light stays on too.Friend said it will be a control box but i cant find any thing other than the box of relays in engine bay and the fuse box.Any advise would be apreciated as i dont want to go to auto elec. Cheers.

Check that the alternator is charging, voltage across battery terminals with engine running should be 13.9 - 14.2 volts. If thats ok, start checking wiring plugs for bad connections.

Is youre interior fan/aircon working? If not than you have to replace charging relay (only blue one in the relay box),but most of the times faulty alternator is cousing blow ups of charge relay.

Thanks for the help guys.I gave the alt a blast with the waterblaster and the dash lights went out but it was barely charging. As cleaning the alt is a pain and a problem i will always have,i was thinking of ditching the a/c and mounting another alt there.Advantages of higher mounted alt, easy removal for cleaning if needed, remove a/c grill for better air flow through radiator and easier cleaning. But i was wondering as most alts have one belt pulley is it nessesary to run the two belts for the power steering and new alt?.Any thoughts .I would leave the old alt in place to run water pump and vacum for brakes. Thanks

Hes had to replace the bearings in the original alternator that is now only a vacume pump twice and still killed a top mount alternator with mud. There has to be a better way but no one seems to of found it. Other 4wds also suffer this calamity although there alternators are easier to get at. Maybe go back to the old fashioned but sealed dc generator although they only put out 20 amps

If your lucky it will dry out and start working. If not You need to clean the brushes etc. It is possible that you also burnt out the stator coil in which case you need a new alternator and charge relay

The heater fan won't go until the alternator is charging. Also the a/c won't go without the heater fan going. As Geeves said maybe it'll all go when the alternator dries out.I went to fit a spare alternator, noticed it was a bit grotty so gave it a dose of water blaster. Then had to fit another spare.I'll pull it to bits sometime and see what's wrong. Regards,Harry.

Guys, My poor baby had to go in for repairs the alternator was, well for want of a pleasant word, erm.... screwed needed recon alternator the guy was doing the timing belt, and service at the same time, so was one BIG bill, got to learn how to fix this thing myself! i used to do my own, ordinary car, but this seams so difficult to do anything on it. going to try and move the alternator up higher in the engine bay, perhaps over by the powersteering pump?? only other option guys is to buy a......... i cannot even bring myself to say it a LAND ROVER NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! all my friends have them, and the keep breaking things all the time, but they can buy new or second hand parts so cheap and easy for them. i'll keep you all upto date on any mods i make to the alternator location take care guys, and keep on wheeling adrian

If you don't want your air con pump then you could fit one of the 80amp bighorn alternators there, i have fitted one of these to my mu in the normal place bit its a bit tight and a mission to tension the belt.

Over here the opposite is true. The in laws have a v8 disco. The differance in price between NZ and UK for a new computer paid for a 3 week UK holiday.
