Hey
I have a problem with my bighorn, everytime I turn on my fog lights when I also have my headlights on, the volt-meter on the dash drops to 12v and the belts start screaming, I quite like my fog lights and would really like to use them, also I can't leave the truck sitting for more than 24hrs with out starting it as the battery goes flat!
Any ideas?? HELP!!
Cheers

Hi Mike,Happy New Year to all! :-) Tighten or replace your belts. With the engine running and all accessories turned off, connect a external test voltmeter across the battery with the engine running at 2000km for approx 30seconds and take a volt reading.Should be on or above 13.8v.As for it self discharging, charge and test the battery,it could be stuffed.Otherwise with the engine and all accessories turned off, doors closed, put a low current reading ammeter in series with the negative battery terminal. You should see no or very little reading i.e. less than 250mA.Keep us posted

New belts always stretch a little in the first week or so and on the design of our cars its very easy to not tighten the alternator belt enough. If you cant get it right double check the belt length against the old one. Ive been sold a belt that was too long before Giovanis tests are correct although it should achieve this at over 1000 rpm

yea try as above the belts screaming could just be loose but if its self discharging then could be diodes in alternator an regulator as that is the common isuzu thing to do but hopefully its a loose belt and tired battery

All is fixed (for now!) the alternator was stuffed and was locking when it couldn't handle the load. I managed to pick up an alternator for $230NZ from a wreckers (I'm not really expecting it to last long!) I priced a new one at around $300NZ and a heavy duty one at around $600NZ. As for the battery discharging, it was stuffed as well, new one in and all is good.
Thanks for the suggestions ;D
