the drivers side windows cluster is fried.. the guy before me must of had a problem with the switch and did some dodgy repair work to it ( read: made contacts with aluminium foil : and it melted the whole thing.. Anyway .. my drivers side window is all the way down, so what I'd like to know is what contacts do I need to short out to close the window? Since the MU is my DD, I would like to be able to park my car and still have it be there later in the day In the mean time, I'll try and source a 2nd hand, maybe a new driver's side window switch cluster..

At the window motor conector work out which contacts are the motor with a meter then aply bat and eart to these contacts. If window trys to go the wrong way reverse them

Of course the second hand part uncertainty principle states that you can't locate a 2nd hand part and also know that it works :-)

I finally worked out what was what with the wires.. and I have the windows up now.. but now I have a new problem.. remember that I said the switch cluster melted? well, it's melted all the sheathing on the wires from the window motor to the switch gear .. I took the inner door skin off, cleaned out several years of dust, dirt, dog hair (!) and other assorted crap to find melted plastic and bare wires ..
not impressed, but at least now I can drive the car in the wet now and park it knowing it will still be there later .. lol..
the problem is that since the passenger window can be controlled from the driver's side.. that wiring is also fried/sheathing melted.. so I need to trace the loom back through the car to see if any other wiring is affected..

yuc if the wireing in both doors is melted then the wing inside the loom between the doors almost certainly is as well. To fix properly means cutting open looms and replaceing the wire all the way plus any other damaged wires. When it failed your lucky the car didnt burn. Personaly if everything else is working ok I would leave the loom well alone but run new wiring between the 2 doors. Depending on your capability with wireing you might want to consult an auto sparky on this one

splicing in new wires is no biggie, I'm an electrician by trade, had to do it a lot when I was in the Navy ..
went to 3 Holden dealerships today to try and source a new window switch cluster, all 3 just scratched their heads and didn't know where to start to try and find a replacement part, I suggested the Frontera Sports, Rodeo, Jackaroo might have a similar part.. they just put in the too hard basket and told me to try my luck at a wreckers.. I could probably made a new switch gear cluster from bits from DSE , so I'll go do it.. and if I remember, I might even made a PDF for the arcive for other MU owners to have a go at it ..

Thanks, Just has a look at it.. detailed and useful, ... but I've already spliced in/repaired/replaced the wiring .. there was only like 6 wires to replace in the door, the 2 wires going to the passenger side switch only melted about 10 inches.. supprisingly , all the assorted crap that was in the door acted like insulation around the wires.,. lol.. with the recent few days of rain in Sydney, it must of got some in there and shorted out .. Thanks again Alan..

Hi Guys, from above, it looks like our power window switches are pretty unique to the MU. Just when I need both sides - damn. Also need the drivers side window regulator and motor. Anyone know if another model rodeo or jackaroo system fits?? Only this to fix and she goes on the market in tip top shape. Regards Peter

electricly the jackeroo switch is the same but it wont fit the hole. Some toyotas have a switch that looks the same but dont know how they wire. I tryed this exersise on the bighorn with a switch from a mazda that was a perfect fit Should of metered it first and there would of been less smoke

lol.. those were the initial switches I was looking at, but I found some rocker switches in JayCar that sit more proud, so I modified the original mech board (so I could keep the child lock) with a "hot knife", looks like the OEM switch gear still I was quoted $275 + postage for a 2nd hand unit .. on a side note.. the crack in your door handle is almost identical to mine ..

Any one know where I might find the entire mech for the passenger door??
Mine is fried. Both passenger and drivers switches are shagged so need to replace those to.
I see a trip to the bank manager in my very near future. LOL.
I see jaycar has sum nice rocker switches that I mite look into instead of trying to get genuine ones, but I will need to know how to wire them up if anyone has any diagrams?? Both sides would be good please.

those pictures above could easily have been taken in my MU, only way I can tell the difference is there's no mud in those photos ;D It's a shame the switches didn't fit without a little trimming but 18 months they're still working well despite all the mud!
