I've noticed on these cold mornings and evenings that my reversing lights & annoying beeping sound are intermittently working, which is obviously a dodgy connection that will need fixing in the not to distant. Where about’s is the switch located on a 3.1 auto MU, those in the know? Save me doing exploratory stuff, is it underside of the truck or underneath the shifter cowl?

No. I read the Haynes manual and it gives a vague description of where it is. Since then I have had two goes while being under the car for other "you know what" and unscrewed every thing that resembles a screw in pressure switch, and still not found it. There is one on the driverside in alignment with the gear lever that I can't unscrew as it is situated behind a Gbox oil pipe and that would have to come off first. But I don't know if it’s the one. So my lights still go on & off according to how damp it gets. J

sorry I missed this post earlier. I dont know if this holds true in Isuzus but most cars use a gearbox switch on the manuals and a shifter mounted switch on the autos It will have at least one wire on it

For the manual box, there are two switches, one reversing switch and one in 4WD switch.
If i remeber rightly the reversing switch is on the left hand side, on the side of the gearbox, appox near the gear stick, two wires comming out of it. Looks like a bung, 24mm hex

Well Geevesy was right, there is a mechanism + beeping box of tricks at the base of the shifter which appears to responsible for this action. You need to remove the stereo cowl first by 2 screws on the side. Then remove the two side screws on the shifter cowl & the 2wd/4wd transfer knob. Don't remove the shifter grip as this is not necessary. Then remove the front two screws from the handbrake cowl, (push the seats right back. And if you lift up the front of this cowl you will see the remaining two screws on the shifter cowl screwed into the trans tunnel. Once that’s all manoeuvred out the way, remove the 4 screws from the shifter selector facia so it can be slid up to expose the switch mech. The beeper is the white box on the driver’s side, and you will see a 2 core green wire going around the front and into the passenger side of the shifter terminating at two connectors. These appear to be the circuit and at the base of the shifter is where the connection is made in the Reverse position. Of course as soon as I had discovered this it never failed to work once. So I did the big WD40 clean up and we'll see how it goes. Here are some pics, apologies for their quality as I only had my phone to take em with. J

I think I have a spare one of those boxes in the shed. Will have to look to confirm though. I bought it in NZ when I visited last. I was after the peice that connects the cable to the shift selector to force you to put the car in park when you wish to take the keys out. I needed protection when my misses was driving. She nearly took out 2 mercs and a commadoor at a petrol station when it was rolling down the hill. I also used the square rubber seal between the gearbox and selector and the nylon bushes that stop the selector from vibrating.
So anything else ie solentoid, module, microswitches, overdrive button.. are proably still on it. Let me know if you want any of it.
Cheers!

Hi Guys
My Wizard (Auto) had the same problem. Took an Auto elect 2 days to sort it out. As far as I can tell the Reversing lgt circuit is part of the Neutral/PArk switch unit which is on the side of the A/T. Haven't had any problem since

Also same prob on a 94 Bighorn auto, appears to be a common thing for this switch to only work when the trucks warm and even then only when it feels like it. Usually a waggle of the shifter will get it to go, must be the contacts.. dirty or worn. Have yet to investigate further

Thanks all for this interesting thread. I recently fitted a third reversing lamp to supplement the fitted two. I have since read that NZ law allows only two reversing lights so just how I will fare when I take the car for its WOF I 'm not sure. Thanks especially for the info on the position of the beeper box. If I have time this weekend I think I will have a go at killing this annoying and unnecessary (for me) accessory.
David.
