hi i bought a 92 2.8td MU in december and have now encountered a problem with the headlights. the problem being that when i start the engine the headlights come on and stay on by themselves, they do turn off after i turn the engine off though this has only just recently hapended has anyone got any ideas to what the problem might be (before anyone asks i have tried turning them off) any help would be good thanks.
the headlights stay on even when the relay is taken out off the fuse box in the angine bay.
regards Brad.

You could try removeing the bulbs. If that doesnt work try the following. It sounds like a shout in the wireing somewhere probably activating the relay as the feed to the headlights would carry too much curent for the rest of the loom. There are 2 relays in the fuse box which should be labled as high and low beam Removeing these will point you in the direction of the problem. Do the lights come on only when the engine is running or are they on with ignition on but engine stopped. Have you had any work done on the car latly This is the first place to start. My hunch say look under the dashboard first but this is a guess. Some of these things can take time to track down but all you can do is go over everything methodicly with a multimeter.

if the lights are coming on when the engine is running it sounds like they have shorted into the charge circuit/ blower fan as this also only works when the engine is running id suggest that you check continuty between the positive feed to the lights and this circuit. if memory serves me correct if you pull the wiring connector off the diesel water seperator assembly it should cut the supply to the charging circuit and blower heater and the warning lights on the dash will come on. hope this helps to narrow things down.

sorry forgot to mention that if the head lights stay on when the supply is cut to the fan its a problem somewhere else.
