Just driving to work this morning and went to turn off the highway to find my steering EXTREMELY heavy. I noticed yesterday the PS pump leaking a bit of fluid, but nothing much to worry about, or so I thought. I was making a bit of a noise too and thought I should get that looked at during the next service. Anyway, pulled in at work (not far from the turn off, thankfully) popped the bonnet and found the PS pumps pulley handing out, jamming the fan and all belts loose. Looks to me like the bearing let go. Pulley and spindle look OK (to a non-mechanic). Anyone know if you can just get the bearing? They look pretty easy to get out and apart. Is there much to go wrong with these things? Otherwise does anyone know the part number and I'll try to get a replacement from a wreckers. 1993 2.8ltr TD. Also, anyone know what I should be paying for something like this? Cheers Stu

Not to bad a price. You only get to skin a couple of knuckles putting it back in. The insides are the same as subaru liberty but different case

Actually turns out that it wasn't reconditioned but came straight out of a '95 Rodeo - still has a 3 month warranty though. Looks easy enough to put in myself, although trying to do that in work's carpark (when I'm supposed to be working) will be fun!

Not hard just a little fiddly. Loosen the 2 bolts in the front bracket that holds the pump to the head (12 or 14mm socket.) Then remove the bolt at the back of the pump into the same bracket(open end spanner same size). This is where your knuckle get skinned. Remove the fan belts and hoses. Remove the front bolts Remove the bracket and pump as one assembly. From memory there are 3 bolts holding the pump to the bracket but you have to take the pulley off as well. This is a largish nut on the shaft. Refitting is a simple reverse of this but makesure the pulley bolt is very tight. I had this come loose on mine and it wrecked the pulley. New pulley = $280 second hand cant get as wreckers sell complete pumps. Then you just need to bleed the system. The book says lift both front wheels and turn full right then left then start engine and repeat.Dont know if you can short cut this. You can drive without the power steer pump as long as you dont need to parallel park. After 30kph the difference is only barely noticable
