Hi, and seasons greetings. I have seen a few threads relating to power steering leaks in hoses and/or pipes. My MU spewed fluid out of what I assume is the steering box, below where the steering shaft universal joint joins into a rectangular box thing via a spline. I guess this is a broken seal. Any further addition of fluid takes about 10 secongs to anoint the engine bay. Can anyone advise whether this is a job for one with limited experience, or should it be left to the experts. Cheers. Ian

Look at this clubisuzu.com/images/PDF/repairs/steeringseal.zip The seal is fiddly to change but not impossible. The experts nearly always convince you a full rebuild of the box is needed which will empty an average credit card. Only catch is if the shaft with the spline has rust underneath the boot which will eat the new seal quite quickly.

Many thanks I'll see if it's going to be covered by warranty. Cheers.

The car yard seems to think it's covered but I have to take back to them in Virginia, and I'm in Waterford West. Is it safe to drive this distance, or is more damage or total loss of steering likely? Thanks Ian

Unlikely to damage or loose steering steering but if the fluid runs low it will suddenly get very heavy in the steering. If I had to take it any distance I would take the belt off the power steer pump just to be safe. This will result in no air con and heavy steering but its not that bad if your ready for it and avoid tight slow corners or too much maneuvering.
