Has anyone replaced a front lower ball joint for a Bighorn. I got to a stage where I feel the drive shaft will have to be disconnected before I can remove the ball joint. Is this so or is there an easier way?

Do you mean the lower Ball joint on the A arm? It should be easy enough but jack and support the chassis and use a jack to lower the A arm in a controlled way. The A arm will tend to follow so you may need to lift the Hub away from the A arm (assuming you have parted the ball joint already). Possibly use a bar to lift the hub to make it easier for you.

Dont put the jack under the 4 bolts that hold the ball joint to the a arm. Be carefull as there isnt very many other places to safely place the jack. It can be done but you dont want the jack springing out towards you.

A block of wood is good to avoid the uneven surfaces that can make a jack slip.

Thanks for the feedback. I should have explained myself a little better. I separted the ball joint and had the four bolts disconnected but i could'nt remove the ball joint (Front Lower Left side) due to the drive shaft and it's casing being in the way. Does this (drive shaft) need to be disconnected from the hub or is there a special way of getting it out? I got a bit worried at this point and bolted everything back together.

Ive done the so many times but cant remember any tricks. Only thing that comes to mind is lowering the jack that is holding the lower A arm. The car is on stands isnt it??

If you have not sorted this yet. I did mine last week and found the same problem. Mines an '89 with manual hubs The ball will not come out of the hub because the CV joint is in the way. The answer is to take the front of the locking hub off, ensure that it is in the "Free" position and be careful not to drop while it is off. Remove the cir-clip and washer ( buried in the grease) and the drive shaft will slide back and create space to allow you to lift the ball-joint out and drop in the new one. This covers it pretty well if you follow it as far as releasing the drive shaft goes. www.clubisuzu.com/Workshop_Repairs.html

I did mine this way a few weeks ago and all seemed ok but found a torn cv boot 3 weeks later Torn across the ribs not along them so Im guessing a tool got a little close. After removing the circlip in the hub you only have to undo the inner cv boot and reach inside to remove the spring clip that holds the inner cv in then it all comes apart. cv boots are cheap but cv grease is the blackest messyist stuff youve ever had to get everywhere
