After chasing up some brackets today at the wreckers I turned the MU on and the most terrible and most loud sound I have ever heard a vehicle make eminated from it.
It was something like cross between a death wail, steel being torn and nails down a chalk board.
It was LOUD!
By loud I mean the noise was loud enough to stop all 50 or so people in their tracks. Forklift drivers were actually covering their ears!
The steering was rock solid stuck and I could not turn the wheels.
Feeling a little sheepish at this point with no less than 100 eyes focused on me, I reversed slowly and put some muscle into it. After a few meters the noise stopped and the steering suddenly went normal again.
I have had a leaky power steering box for as long as I have had the MU and a month ago is stopped leaking...
Guess it is time for a new one...
Last time I was quoted 500 for the bloody thing.

It might be the pump. If it is it will of most likely sprayed oil out of the resivoir. good luck. The pump is easier to change than the box

A frontera one eh... Interesting. I will chase one up.
I take it you bought it from the wreckers?
There is no fluid leaking at all.

James, The box was from the Frontera put an O-ring kit through the pump. Got the box from Nick
Hope that helps you on line?

Hey Dave,
Where did you source the pump kit from? Holden or someone else?
Mines starting to leak and would really like to fix.
Cheers, J

If you cant get it anywhere else the pump shares the same kit with the Subaru legacy. Cant use the whole legacy pump though. These pumps suck air when they leak rather than driping oil. Result is foam in the system which makes the resivor overflow

After some further investigation it appears to be the AC compressor that has seized.
As they share the same belt the power steering pump is not getting power and the steering is a no go...
I will still replace the power steering box though at the same time.

Damn getting one of these suckers is harder than I thought.
Those that have them want $300+ for one...
