I have just bought a UCS55 MU, its a beaut little truck.
I have noticed that the steering seems a little sloppy, it could be that I am so used to rack and pinion steering in a car and have not gotten used to the steering box yet?? Do any of you MU owners agree, or could my steering box and linkages be excessively worn?

Its not as persise as rack and pinion but if you think it feels sloppy it probably is. Likly causes in order of cost. Tyres too hard or soft set them at 30psi. Worn tie rod ends, worn universal in steering collum, Worn idler arm, worn suspension bushes or ball joints, worn steering box, These will all be easy to pick up by lieing under the car watching the parts in turn while someone moves the steerin from side to side. It could also be loose wheel bearings or wheels Less likly but probably should be checked first. I dropped a wheel and it cost 1100 in parts It could of been much much worse

Additional to geeves sugestions, the steering box has a specified amount of backlash and can be adjusted if outside this spec, assuming it's not overly worn.
See the manual for spec and adjustment procedure.

Thank you both for the suggestions, I will have a closer inspection tonight and see what's going on. Cheers

The excessive movement appears to be confined to the steering box only. I tried adjusting the amount of backlash, but the someone has already had a go and butcherd the adjustment screw. Might be time to change the complete steeing box assembly, as i'm concerned I wont be able to get a wof with the amount of movement it has now. Anyone with a spare sttering box??

Dont know of any being wrecked privatly at the moment. A wrecker could be the best bet although talking to a shop that does power steering could be worthwhile. Replace the input seal on the new box before fitting It is a cheap seal and 1500 times easier to do with the box out

I have a spare steering box up here in Auckland with a new input shaft seal in it. also have one in pieces that would suit a rebuild. let me know if you are interested in the spare one, from memory the backlash was pretty good on it when it was in my truck. Cheers

Where abouts are you? guess around $100 would be good for it, I purchased one from bits for isuzu at some stage and think I paid around $240 but can't remember. If you're nearby I'd be keen to take your old one and have a play with it and my spare parts to try and fix it up too. can call me on 021404499 if you like

Thanks Garth, I'll have to get back to you at a later stage (and hope you still have it) as I had a prang in my Mu this morning on the way to work! Im need to buy a few parts to repair the front end, so I'll have to sort my steering box problem out later when im back on the road again. Thanks again mate, Leigh.

No worries, hope you get it back up and running soon. I should still have plenty of parts lying around when you need them.
