ABS Brakes

Hi Team,my 1998 4JG2 T/D Wizard has ABS and I have only noticed the surg effects of the ABS back through brake peddle once under hard braking.Do the brakes require more preventative maintanance than conventional brakes and I suppose there will be more expense involved in a brake repair job due to the sophisticated nature of the system?What actually are the pros and cons of ABS?

My MU has ABS. I've changed the pads normally but don't know of any special things to do.
Sometimes driving hard off road might illuminate the ABS dash light, so I shut down the engine for a few seconds and the light's gone after I restart.

Other than that, I know nothing about the system.
