Hi all, Just wondering what other cars use or have used the 4JG2 (3.1L TD) engine. I heard rumors that the older Jackaroo used this engine?
Cheers Chris

Jackeroo/Bighorn/Trooper/Monterey = same vehicle and yes 92 - 97 modles did use this engine if diesel. Mu used this engine about 94 - 98 Rodeo and Isuzu ute used it up to 2000 Its probably also in a few Isuzu trucks either in turbo or on turbo form. The earlier modles used the 4bb1t (2.8) The later ones got the 4jz1 (3.0)

The jackaroo did use 4jg2 engine although I understand that there are some differences between the engines... especially the Aussie ones. Ie instead of a timing belt the jackaroos used a timing chain, the injector pump was also different.

Timing chain ¿?¿?....Could you upload some pic of that, please ¿?....I never have seen any 4J series engine with timing chain....
The 2.8 TD is 4JB1T and 3.0 Tdi is 4JX1T...

Are you sure about the chain.I have a 96 Rodeo motor, still a 4jb1,which has geared timing, not belt or chain.

I am not sure if any of the Rodeo series in australia used an timing chain. Personnally I have not seen a Timing chain inside a 4JG2 (3.1L). The guys at Kumback auto wreckers and Jackaroo world here in Melb mentioned this to me. I am sure a holden dealer or another club member might have a pic.
The guys at Kumback also talked about the gear driven timing in the rodeos.

Yes... the 4J`s workshop manual only refers to a timing gear and/or belt, but nothing about timing chain.

I had a 1990 model holden rodeo with the 2.8 in it and they do have a chain with an alloy cover on the front. I am also prety sure the jackaroos had them too. Oz is only a little backwards.......

Yan,
If you are the same Yan I am thinking of, I think I saw your truck in action out near Raymond Terrace in some old Quarry. I was down from Brissie with Ben's sister.
Mate, one hell of a MU. It helped me convince one of my mates on this forum to buy one (Pissy).
Put a photo up and he's be happy.
Hope all is well down there.
