around the back of the alternator is the vacuum pump, it has full oil pressure going to it. As far as I know there is just a few o rings that seal it.

If it is this one which sounds like the case then the oil also gets into the alternator causeing damage so dont leave it too long

How mechanical are you? It might be worth getting a quote over the phone from a couple of local auto sparkys. To get the alternator out is typical Isuzu. First out with the battery . Then dismount the aircon pump being careful not to loosen the hoses and place on battery tray Then you can almost get at the hoses on the alternator and all the top bolts. Then remove the front wheel and the rubber flap on the inner guard. Yoy can now reach the remainder of the hoses on the alternator and the rear of the lower bolt. The front of this can be reached from either underneath or the top. Underneath has safty risks and all the mud falls in your eyes. On top can be a problem if the car is jacked up. It can be reached from the inner guard as well but very tricky. The alternator I got from the wreckers was got out just through the inner guard but there was a pool of oil under that MU. Putting it back in the bighorn this bolt was done from underneath. It took me 2 hours to change the alternator but this was the first time Ive done one. Inside I dont know sorry. You can buy the vaccume pump as a separate part.

the oil could be coming from 2 poss places on vaccum pump, the oil line has 2 copper washers on the sides of the bolt that screws the oil line into vac pump they could be leaking or the o ring on the back of vac pump wer it joins alternator. the vac pump is held on by 3 screws and jus pulls strait off the spline from the alt shaft. prob a good time while it out to check brushes too

thanks for that, had a look through by the wheel but looks like it must be coming from the seal inside but gotta take of the wheel to get a better look. is it possible to take off the vac pump without taking off the alt? if not then i think ill just get it done under insurance as i cant b f'ed to take it out! and will only cost $100 take me more that $100 of my time i would thnk!

If you have mechanical insurance dont touch it yourself. the insurance companies get a bit funny about that

Be wary of chasing leaks, the best first course of action is to clean the whole area... then keep a close eye on it all... often the source is not where you think it is.... also there is not live oil pressure to the vacume pump as I can make out, I could be wrong, (I though I was wrong once before but was mistaken).... just a drain for any residual oil back into the sump.... the hardest of the three hoses to get at
