Is it possible to hook up a rev limiter on a 4jg2 motor? Just hate putting the foot down in bogs and looking down to see the needle in the red. Alternatively, what about hooking up some sort of shift light?
Cheers,Dave

I though all diesels had a governor that stopped them over reving.

Yeah I thought all diesels had them, but I have had it red line on me before, might see if I can find out why it isnt working

Wheres the red line on yours and what revs did you hit. Mine red lines at 4200 and the rev limiter is just after this You know when you hit it as it feels almost like droping a rod but no bang

I cannot put my engine into the red even with free reving, it just hits the governor (right on redline) and goes no further, dosn't sound bad at all (no valve bounce or anything)... But this is on the 4jb1, so no idea abut the 4jg2

I think as a general statement all diesels have a governer, even really old ones. I haven't seen anywithout. The governor will limit the engine revs, thus 'the rev limiter'. Well my understanding anyway. The governor will have a stop or limit where it won't open up the fuel rack anymore. But I'm wondering if cranking up the fuel flow may lift this upper limit? I'm not sure.
Dave, have you or a previous owner cranked up the fuel flow?

OK, all mechanical MUs have governers they are part of the injector pump. They consist of a set of spinning weights that throw out ewhen the governor reaches a set RPM. This is set straight of the timing belt and into the injector pump so it has nothing whatsoever to do with the fuel rack settings.
With the old inline injector pumps you could adjust the tension on the spring that pushes the rack and fights the spinning wieghts, ie increase the rev limit. I believe the same would be possible with a rotary FIP. Although by no means advisable!!!!!!!
Its there to protect your engine, why mess with it, it will not increase power, by then the torque curve is well and truly dropped off. So unless someone has fiddled with yours earlier, then it should be set and work fine!
Try it.....jump in and when its all nice and warm (after a decent drive) rev it and if it goes past the redline, get it seen to! But I would be very surprised if it did, but also allow for the tacho error, these have a tendancy to be about 500 rpm out at times, mine jumps all over the place occasionally.
Goodluck.
Matt. ;D

Well it turns out it does have a limiter It kicked in at just under 4750rpm, with the redline being at 4250. Must've looked like the revs were higher than that when I was trying to get out of that damn bog. Thanks for your input guys. Dave

Does your motor use any oil?If any oil is getting out thru the breather and into the intake the motor will quite happily ignore the governor while running on it's own oil.
