just got the mu back from the machanic, went in for a new clutch kit, but got engine oil, gearbox and diff oils done too. ended up needing new master cylinder and also the firewall had a crack in it were it bolts on that needed fixing any way, now i got new oils i wont to keep them water free. were abouts is the gearbox breather and is it eaily extended? were is the best place to extend all the breathers, i take it theres a front and back diff and a gearbox anything else to worry about? thanks for the help.

Only other thing is the transfer case. The diff breathers are easy to find the gearboc ones can be got at by removeing the rubber boot on the 4wd lever. Extend the lines useing oil resitant tube to the highest point under the bonnet then fit large fuel filters to the ends so the tube goes in at the top and the open end points down. Remember that this is not an absolute garentee of water prevention as if the gearbox is hot and dunked in cold water the oil will shrink faster than the breather can keep up Water may be sucked passed the seals. This has happened to me once. If water gets in a gearbox the imediate symptom is loss of synchros New oil will fix but long term damage is done if the water is left in there

thanks geeves, going to do this tomoro,
should i extened all of them to under the bonnet including the back diff?
does the rubber boot just pull off or did you cut it off? so just under there is the top of the gearbox breather?
were abouts it the tansfer case one?
i understand its not 100% garentee but better than what it is now:)
should i use a fuel filter for each breather or 1 for all? are these nesscesery, im guessing its just for dust? will any type do?
sorry about all the questions...

Gearbox and transfer share the same breather. The boot pulls off Run a separate hose and filter for each one. The cheap filters at supercheap do the job and only 3 - 4 bucks each. They stop dust but also provide a small expansion chamber to prevent water being sucked down the breather line.

I've got my front diff and transfer case breathers extended to underneath the bonnet & the rear diff into the boot with a rubber grommet where ive had to drill a hole into the under body.. Haven t had any probs with water gettin in. Also if ur MU is the same as mine ur transfer case breather might already be done.. Mine was done but replaced it with a bigger diameter hose..

got some hosing and fuel filters today.
managed to pull of the boot around the gear leavers off, i take it the breather is the white plastic thing behind the 4wd gear leaver is....
what have people done to add the hose to it as it just pulls out and theres a hole. i was thinking getting something that has a slight tapper on it to go in there, wot have uses used?
there abouts in the engine bay are your breathers? i was thinking of putting it around the brakebooster somewere, sound good?
i take it that the shorter the hose is the better.
so there is a total of 3 breathers, front back diff and gearbox/transfer case, what about the desiel tank breather, is that sweet?

I've put my diff breathers on the other side, next to the fuel filter. A bit of space over there. I thought it was too crowded on the left, brake booster, master cylinder etc etc.
Still need to do the transfer case :-) .

There is one for the transfer case and another for the gearbox, very close together around the gear sticks, as per the two described in your link. I too had simular hassles finding the right plastic fittings, but I dind't try to hard. I simply drilled the small plastic caps slightly smaller than the soft hose I bought, then push fitted them in, and RTV em to make sure of a seal, then actually ran two hoses rather than fitting a T. The cost of hose wasn't much and easier than finding the right T.
Also something that is not often mentioned is at the high end of the tube put a U bend in so it ends facing down, stops crud falling in and if water ever does get that high at least it won't flow by garavity... think the S bend under a sink. cheers. :-)

got the bits for my gearbox and transfer breathers today.
ganna run 2 seperate lines, just wondering if anyone has any pics of the other beather on the gbox?
also can the fuel filters go in the line and not on the end of the pipe? i ask this beucase by the time i bend the pipe to a U at the end then add the fuel filter to the end of it i loss like 50-100mm on hight.

One of the functions of the fuel filter is to act as a surge chamber. For this to work properly it needs to be at the end of the pipe and facing down. If it is in line then water can be sucked down the hose and it will pass straight through the filter unless you fit it in an inverted u bend at the high point of the inverted u
