Hey, What are Hilux Surfs like? how do they compare to MUs. they seem pretty cheap for toyotas. the one i'm looking at is a 2.4 turbo diesel, 91 model 133000ks, with an awesome amount of extras and in great nic. Cant seem to see how it could go wrong. Cheers.

start with a maintenance requirement for a new head every year or 2. The 2lt with the alloy head is the worst motor ever made by toyota. The earlier one with the steel head is better but still has head problems. If you must buy a surf get the 1kzh 3 liter common rail motor. Even this will crack heads if given the chance but only slightly worse than some other brands we know and love. Otherwise pretty robust. In NZ they would be the most common 4wd on city streets and on the trails so cant be all bad.

Another thing to factor in is that the 2.4T surf is quite gutless, both on and off road. Have had several friends with them and they eventually sell, or look into engine exchange. They have about 95hp new which simply isn't enough offroad esp when trying to do steep climbs or soft bottom river crossings etc. They often end up struggling in low 1st gear where the isuzu powers through in L2. They have way less grunt than the basic 2.8td isuzu which runs at 110-115hp - a good sturdy performer still.
They are also not wonderful when put under load on the road, e.g. towing, climbing hills, headwinds etc. On one trip we had to put the surf behind another truck to help it keep up its speed into a headwind. Otherwise running gear ok and plenty of parts - they share some parts with hi-ace vans also.

Here's a website for surfers. It might hilight some problems on their forum. I have no personal knowledge of them except for disappearing in the exhaust smoke of a red one every few days driving to work. Cheers www.toyotasurf.asn.au/

Someone at work had to have their hilux engine rebuilt twice. The crankshaft broke. They bought a 3 litre nissan patrol, and that engine had to be rebuilt twice, the second time within two weeks.

Dont buy a hilux surf unless you have deep pockets, they are heavy, they are slow , they dont handle like an isuzu, and although the parts are pretty cheap you go through a lot of them. example, gloplugs 4 different ones, heads, overheating problems, electrical faults, jamming in 4 wheel drive, and the list goes on, im always working on my parents one.

The 2.4 turbo diesel is not overly powered but o.k The surf has nicer on road handling in my opinion but not as powerful or as "tough" as a wizard,(hard to describe but you hopefully get my drift). I have owned both and prefer the wizard but the surf is still a great vehicle.
