South Africa is a long distance driving country, we use our Isuzus which are mainly pick ups for carrying stuff around, sometimes to the maximum of the vehicle's capacity. This weekend we were transporting cattle on a trailer on two return trips with a combined distance of about 1600 km. On the last leg of the last trip the temperature gauge of the 4JB1T suddenly went down instead of climbing. This warranted some investigation, which revealed a broken water pump and an empty radiator (strange that the temperature gauge only measures temperature in water and if there is no water there is no measurement). As a quick and temporary measure we sourced a used water pump, which we replaced alongside the road. The engine was restarted to a cloud of white smoke and very erratic idling and when driven it really had no power and had to be towed th rest of the journey. Now I am contemplating the repairs, which I intend carrying out myself. I still have to open the engine to see extent of damage.

hi kb280dtza bugger although you may have dropped a injector only as apposed to have detonating your motor?. the motor will have those symptoms if its not firing on all 4. firstly try cracking each injector line whilst the motor is idling rough before pulling it down. failing that then take the head off. were you driving it for a long period of time without coolant or did you notice when it was too late.? goodluck. muvit

bad luck and not a good prognosis Im afraid. Diesels dont like being overheated and because of the dry liners in Isuzu engines they like it even less. Im guessing at least a cracked head and possibly damaged pistons and liners. It might also be turbo damage. Check for water in the oil for starters. The gauge is fitted in the thermostat housing which is well away from the heat and relies on the water flow to operate correctly. It would of taken some time to give a low reading. good luck with this one

Thanks to you all (although I am more worried than before). As of last check through the dipstick there were no signs of water in oil. One serious thing I noted was oil leaking in the air intake pipe in the concertina like section (the pipe turned out to be cracked on the underside). I could not tell where the oil was coming from as it could have come from the turbo or the breather(?) pipe linking rocker cover and the air pipe, still have to investigate.
I once lost a 4JB1T under similar conditions (leaking radiator), after giving up it could not be cranked to life and when opened the pistons had melted and valves were blown. Since this one can fire I am really hoping for a lesser serious situation.
