Hello, Can anyone tell me if the brakes on a 92Mu are the same as a Holden Rodeo? Was on my way home from work today when i noticed the brake pedal was creeping towards the floor. Checked the brake fluid and it was almost all gone. The inside of my rear left wheel is now covered in brake fluid too so it looks like something is wrong there. The calipers that came with the car siezed up not long after getting it, and i had them replaced with second hand reconditioned calipers. I'm thinking it could be the calipers again. While we're on the topic, has anyone done anything to upgrade the brakes on their 4x4. The brakes on the Mu have never really been great. Had a look on this web site and it looks like they could have slotted/cross-drilled rotors to fit isuzu's. www.dba.com.au/rotors_4wd.aspand the product reference catalogue: www.dba.com.au/DBAcat_012005.pdfSome extra stopping power would be good for when towing the trailer or under heavy load. Anyway, any comments on my first question would be appreciated. Daniel

Second hand calipers couldnt of been reconed very well! You can get a kit for the calipers in NZ from BNT but you might also need new pistons which are unavailable. BNT do have a service where they can get your pistons sleeved in stainless steel but from Aus the wait could be a little long. Theres likly to be a similar outfit in Aus but I have no details. If its a similar year the Rodeo should fit. Only things to watch out for are abs brakes are different and some Rodeos have a drum handbrake on the inside of the disc. You cant use either of these. For 4wd use I wouldnt use slotted/drilled disks as pad wear is accelerated severly esspecialy with a little mud around. For towing though it could be a good idea but those disks are not cheap

I took the Mu to the local Midas service centre this morning. He said i need to either overhaul the calipers or get a caliper kit. He reckons it looks like the Jackaroo brakes so i got him to order them in, hopefully they will fit. I would rather spend the extra cash for new parts than recondition the reconditioned ones. He said about $275 for each caliper. I will keep you posted on how they go so if they fit you can put the part no. on the website.

Just got a price on the slotted rotors from Disc Brakes Aust. They are $402 for both rear discs, as opposed to $310 for standard. Thats an extra $45 each, i'm gonna go with the slotted discs and see how they perform.

Thats a good price. But i've got the mechanic ordering mine in so he's probably charging a bit extra for the effort. My discs have just worn too much. Minimum thickness is suposed to be 10.6mm. Mine are at 10mm.

Local wrecker wanted NZ$150 for second hand disks Told him the price of new and he reconed they would be cheap rubbish but they were Lucas brand and dont seem to have worn at all in 18 months. I would be tempted to put slotted rottors on the front and run std on the back as its the front where most of your braking happens. Expect to change pads about 1.5 times as often. Thats the price of the better cleaning of the slotted disks

dba claim that the slotted rotors will improve pad life. I think its because of lower operating temperatures due to the "Kangaroo Paw" design.

Jeff these were after market copies of the original. Chances are they are the original but without the isuzu box. Pad life with slotted rottors for normal cars with normal use is fairly close to the same as normal but we have heavy cars and use them in abnormal conditions. The extra dust etc eats the pads away and the slots just make this worse

Well, my brakes are finished ($1700 later), only to find out that the drivers side handbrake cable has siezed Now i know i can get the cable from 4x4isuzu in NZ, but no doubt there will be a delay on delivery. Am i able to get one from Holden or better still, Repco? And if so, does anyone have a part no.? Also, my brakes still seem a bit spongy. Does that mean there is air in the brake system? Cheers

Try and free the cable up first. I spent an hour working mine back and forwards while dribbling kero down it to free mine up then pours lots of oil in there and replaced the boots. 2 years later still going strong. You cant get boots or so Im told but the boots off the clutch cables on Nissan sunnys and pulsars can be made to fit with a cable tie or 2 If the brakes are still spongy take it back and tell them your not happy This might be due to the left rear not adjusting due to the cable but if its due to air they havent done there job properly
