When i grab the front drive shaft and turn it, how much movement should there be? I have a strange noise under there somewhere and cant track it down.. Have turned the drive shaft in 2wd and have about 1/4 turn of movement..
Thx

1/4 turn sounds like a lot. Is the play in a U joint or in the diff or in one of the CV joints. I had a squealing/grinding noise whenever the hubs were locked. Eventualy tracked it down to the needle bearing that suports the half shaft inside the stub axle assembley. This bearing and associated seal are replaced from the back of the stub axle.

Well drive shaft is out... upon closer inspection..(with my ears.. ).. it sounds like it is comin from the C.V area, the boots have a small split in them.. sounds more like a knocking noise..will check the needle bearing although it was replaced about 6mths ago.. thx geeves very much appreciated

Yea... looks like a clean, re-lube and reboot of C.V's.. there is a lot of sand in them but not clicking yet.. hoping thats the source of the noise..
