Hi all, Since I had my MU I have been crying about my economy. Being a tight ar$e I have always gone to Shell due to the 4 cents discounts per liter and have pretty much always gotten the same Kms per a tank. 2 months ago I read somewhere that someone was getting different kms per tank with different brands/stations. So with this in mind I thought I would give it go, laughing at the thought . Well I changed to BP diesel and it took a few tanks to use up the old shell stuff but now I am getting a consistent 50kms or more doing the same amount of driving along the same routes. Do the major Brands (Shell, BP, Mobile) all use similar processes/plants to make the diesel or are they all making it their own way? (if that makes any sense) Maybe the stations that offer discounts due shopper dockets (Coles and Woolworth’s), for lack of a better word,..."water down or is it ethanol" their diesels to make up for the cheaper price. Anyhow just wondering if others have similar thoughts, or am I just shoving sh!t? ;D Cheers

Ive heard this before but dont know how true it is. I dont know how diesel is supplied/distributed in Aus but in NZ it all comes via a single tank at Marsden point unless its being sold by Gull who import there own or if there is a shortage in which case which ever company also import there own from whereever they get the best price. The main oil companies do add there own additives but officialy all diesel is much the same excpt that BP and Mobil have an anti foam additive.

I don't know if it's BS or not, but your observations count. I've been complaining about economy for a while too and almost exclusively been using Caltex (for a Woolworths discount) fuel. Next tank or 3 I'll try another company's fuel and see what happens. Last trip cost 71L to do 495Km which is 14+L/100Kms or about 24mpg. I'll try anything at this point. Graham.

Yeah Graham, its worth a try, I just realised that its approxiately only $4 more for 84 liters at a non discounted servo (which is nothing to cry about). Shell didn't help so try BP if you can. Hopeful you'll see a difference for the better.
Cheers

Haven't tested mileage but have been experimenting with power from different diesels and have consistently found Challenge to give more pep than shell and BP. Feels sharper, like a few hp extra. My mechanic tells me this is also an imported diesel - may have less or different additives in it Any NZ processed diesel is known to be of very low quality. - Mike.

I guess every driver and Mu is different. I've found that the anti-foaming additive in Mobil's fuel gives me more Km's than BP and definately more than shell. At the moment i'm trying GULL seeing as tho its a new thing for me (being from the mainland) - but on my 1st tank - it's not looking as good as i hoped. Maybe its all the sideways action i get in my MU on these consistantly wet auckland roads that makes it bubble ;D - that would explain why i need the additive!!

Not sure what the current story is with challenge. The local one gets fuel delivered in a Caltex tanker which then carries on and delivers to Caltex. They used to import there own fuel but I dont belive they do any more. Maybe we should all convert to biodiesel and run our cars on a mixture of lawn clippings and old fat from the fish and chippy

Spoke with challenge station owner today at fill up time. Challenge used to use all imported diesel but company has now been bought out by caltex and all fuel now same as caltex stations. Says its usually NZ processed diesel they sell but still batches of imported also depending on supply and demand etc. Says NZ refinery is improving its quality.....rrrright! Probably not up to the standard of local chippie oil yet but trying hard... Mike

I dont know if this applies to NZ but in OZ BP actually improved the quality of the Diesel 12 months ago to bring it into line with world standard I think.
Thats what I know at the moment.

I seem to get more mileage with caltex than bp. I think I'll try mobil in a fortnight, as I just filled 'er up.
We'll see what happens.

Caltex is about the only diesel I havent run in the MU. Just filled up with BP again. From next fill, in 4 days time, will run Caltex for a few weeks and see how it goes. Does anyone know if in OZ Caltex and Ampol are now the same diesel or not ?
