I've got an Isuzu MU 96 with 200k (auto) on the clock that used to work correctly. But now when I shift into 4x4 low ratio then select "L" to use engine braking down a hill it will change into second after about 1500 revs. I've noticed that the gear indicator lights are not always on (P R N 2 L) which I read in another message is just a micro switch. Seems as though the gearbox doesn't release that it's not in 2 but in L. Any ideas?

Is there a power switch on the MU?? Cause I know with my old Soarer (which had a similar asian warner box) if it was set to power it would hold the gear. I really have no idea but it might help...

There is a power/norm switch. This should hold the gear nicely. Also you can press the warm up button. This activates the engine exhaust brake when in low range.

Just found phantom switch along side gear box that controls the display gear indicator. Switch is out of alignment or worn so when in L there is no gear indicator being displayed so automatic acts as though it's in D. If I fiddle with the gear stick and get L to be displayed the truck holds first gear continuously.
This weekend I'll open it up and investigate the switch.
Cheers for the input so far! ;D

OK pretty sure the "mode switch" is at fault but after another test drive I've noticed that the automatic changes normally from 1st to 4th but never goes into lockup. This is now beyond me so off to the transmission shop. Anyone had this fault?

Theres several conditions that can prevent lockup. Most common is engine temp If its not fully warmed up it wont lock. Could also be the temp sensor.

Tested this by inserting resistor instead of automatic temp sensor. This worked well for 200kms then old problem reoccurred. OK had Mu in shop now, replaced temp sensor in gearbox as faulty. Got Mu back and even after 30Min's of driving no lockup. Automatic mechanic reckons it must be an intermittent electrical fault. So what else causes no lockup? Also mechanic reckons that gearbox is a "asin warner" type.

Definatly Asin Warner box. These are used in everything from acords to volvos these days so if he was telling you its an unusual or dodgy design go somwhere else

Ok fixed the problem. Was going over the wiring with mechanic when we found 2 wires going from an aftermarket switch to the transmission computer. Cut these 2 wires and instantly lockup worked in every gear and has been working perfectly since the end of last year! So an earlier owner has added a switch that disables lockup why? This would ruin fuel economy and over heat engine as you get most torque at lower revs on a diesel. Very strange!!

Probably trying to force lock up rather than disable it. Gives all the advantages of a manual going down hill but not sure what happens if they it trys to change gear while locked. Could result in all the gears ending up outside the case
