I have a 1997 bighorn with a aw30-40le transmission. On two Occasions after going up a hill it has refused to go into overdrive even when sitting at 100k going down the other side. On both occasions after leaving the car for a while it performs fine. The trans has been flushed and is in good condition I have been to two trans specialists and they’re of the opinion that if there is no fault codes then to find the problem could be a major. One of the specialists suspects that it may be that the temperature may have got high but it has never gone into limp home mode nor brought up the temperature warning light or check trans. Has anybody had this problem before?

That trans is used by just about every car maker in the world for at least one modle. Its the same auto as Prodos. Pajeros some Landies Terranos to name a few. The best info Ive ever read on it comes from a volvo site. brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAutoAW30.htmHope this helps

Fit a aditional trans oil cooler. Otherwise I would look at the temp sensors It sounds like overheating

Thanks for the info I do intend to fit a trans cooler to it and it will be interesting to see if it solves the problem. But it still seems a bit strange that it has not thrown up any fault codes.

The trans ECU will start to alter the shift strategy when the oil temp comes up depending on speed at the time. If speed still pretty quick it will hold the lockup clutch on longer than usual to cool things down. If the speed is slower it will delete the OD gear to keep the revs up to help cool things. Higher revs means less oil heating. Both these things will happen before the temp warning light comes on. Sounds pretty normal. An extra cooler will help if you're worried about it, but unless the light comes on often I wouldn't bother.

And Terrano's don't use a 340 style trans. The use a Jatco RE4RO1A pretty much the same as Skylines, some Mazdas and Jatco internals that go in Subarus. Not as good as a 340!
