This is only the second time this has ever come up on a Mu but I had a Starlet for work that also had this habit. Modern fuel systems are sealed for emmisions reasons and have a valved vent to equalise pressure. Sometimes this valve gets a little sticky and as the car cools down on a cold night after a hot day makes a noise as described. As far as I know the valve is in the fuel cap but dont know if it can be cleaned or adjusted

My old bighorn does the same thing, especially noticable on cold night after hot day, noisy when camping beside the truck!! As Alan says it is the fuel tank cap equalising pressure. some do it others don't. And not only Mu's

In the pick up dominated market of South Africa this did not happen with the 3 I have owned so far and I have begun to experience it more with the 2006 3 liter DMAX I have. At first I was worried when I heard it and it happens a few minutes after switching off the engine and I normally open the fuel cap and retighten it again and the noise disappears. Then the new cap is more sophisticated than the ordinary ones I have had before.
