From what I can tell access to these forests is restricted to organised club trips only and probably by permit. Also from the pictures Ive seen they are not a place to go alone. There is a good artical in the latest 4x4 action that says it all in the first 2 paragraphs. Only way in would be via a local club run lead by someone that knows the place and the rules that apply there

Gidday Lewis. As Alan has said the only way to access these forrests is by geting a permit from Carter Holt Harvey. They issue a limited number to the Major Auckland 4wd clubs each year and charge approx $20 per vehicle per trip for access. There are some really good tracks in there, woodhill is drivable all year round but riverhead often becomes an almost impassable clay mud slide after a few days of rain. your best option for regular access is to join a club (Auckland 4wd Club, which I am a member of as well, or North Shore 4wd club are probably the best). This gives you the advantage of always having someone there to tow you out when you get stuck, which is guaranteed to happen on most trips. If you want any contact details then let me know. Unfortunately there isn't really any good cheap places to go 4wding in Auckland for the general Public. I try to do some trips as part of the Auckland group of Club Isuzu when I have the time but am often busy with work and other commitments. I have raised the issue of access for four wheel drive vehicles as part of a public submission process with the Auckland Regional Council regarding Recreation facilities and suggest that as many four wheel drivers as possible take an interest in supporting our sport. Hope this in some way answers your question.
